El Desaparecido ("The Disappeared") is what some people have been calling Manu Chao, and it was even the title of a song on his 1998 album Clandestino. The nickname suits him well, as its been discographic radio silence from him for 17 years. However, listening to the track that gives his latest album its title, it's clear that Mano Negra’s former lead figure hasn't changed one bit—just as his fellow countryman Julio Iglesias might say. "Viva Tu" is a cheerful rumba track characterised by scattered guitars and vocals which pay tribute to his Barcelona neighbourhood’s everyday heroes. The heroines, rather, as he specifically addresses the area’s bakers, house cleaners, and metro cashiers, who were predominantly women.

An elusive figure that maintains great humility, Manu Chao returns with an album that celebrates connections across generations. The rap artist Laeti appears on "Tu Te Vas," and the country legend Willie Nelson joins him on "Heaven’s Bad Day" at 91 years old. Travel is right at the heart of this album, conceived as it is by a tireless globetrotter. He takes us to Brazil to honour the couriers of São Paulo who traverse the city’s streets: “São Paulo is a living monster. And the couriers are the blood that flows through its veins, making it function,” explains the singer. The album’s final track is titled "Tantas Tierras" ("So Many Lands"). A song that perhaps hints at all the music he still has left to write and share with us. But for that, he’ll need to leave his “the disappeared” pseudonym behind. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
