Abstract Shallow landslides have frequently occurred in the Aso volcano, Kyushu island, Japan. Yet, observations of the effects of the physical properties of the soil on the landslide stratigraphy have not been explained. In this study, we conducted field observations—at two landslide sites in the Takadake mountain (Aso volcano) area—to identify the slip surfaces. We found that slip surfaces (at both sites) were located in the lower part of the N3-4 Kuroboku soil layer. This was determined by characteristics of the physical properties of the soil, including particle size distribution and plasticity index. Furthermore, we identified the relationship between plasticity index and the fine fraction of the soil to help explain the identification of slip surfaces. Results showed that Kuroboku and Scoria layers have different characteristics according to the plasticity chart (liquid limit-plasticity index relationship) as well as plasticity index-fine fraction relationship.

Numerous researches on landslides have been carried out by many researches. However, studies on soil physical properties related to landslides potential in volcanic area are still rare. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of soil physical properties on landslides potential. To collect the soil sample, sampling area method was applied. The soil type used in this study was the residual soil. The values of clay liquid limit, plasticity limit, plasticity index, water content, COLE index were used to measure the physical properties of the soil. Organic material was used as the supporting data. The results showed that the soil in the command area showed high value of clay which exceeded 50%. Such high level conditions in each profile affect the liquid limit; plasticity limit, plasticity index, water content, COLE index and organic material. Based on the results, it can be concluded that residual soils with significantly high clay values illustrated the risk of landslide fields formation in Bompon sub-watershed. The clay soil layer was the controlled factor of soil movement.

This study is aimed to specify the physical properties of soil that correlate with the sliding layer of a shallow landslide on the volcanic mountain area. Tephra layers consist of kuroboku and scoria layers and the differences between these layers were specified using the physical properties of soil methods. Results showed that the plasticity index and the fine fraction content can be used for estimating the sliding layer in the Aso volcanic area.

Correlating engineering properties with index properties has assumed greater significance in the recent past in the field of geotechnical engineering. Although attempts have been made in the past to correlate compressibility with various index properties individually, all the properties affecting compressibility behaviour have not been considered together in any single study to examine which index property of the soil correlates best with compressibility behaviour, especially within a set of test results. In the present study, 10 soils covering a sufficiently wide range of liquid limit, plastic limit, and shrinkage limit were selected and conventional consolidation tests were carried out starting with their initial water contents almost equal to their respective liquid limits. The compressibility behaviour is vastly different for pairs of soils having nearly the same liquid limit, but different plasticity characteristics. The relationship between void ratio and consolidation pressure is more closely related to the shrinkage index (shrinkage index = liquid limit - shrinkage limit) than to the plasticity index. Wide variations are seen with the liquid limit. For the soils investigated, the compression index relates better with the shrinkage index than with the plasticity index or liquid limit.Key words: Atterberg limits, classification, clays, compressibility, laboratory tests.

The physical properties of reservoirs determine the ability on accumulating hydrocarbon. As one of the unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, the volcanics own the different characteristics from the clastic rocks on physical properties. The study on the relationship between physical and electrical properties of deep volcanic reservoirs was conducted, using the Luxi area of Junggar basin as an example. By our study, some conclusions have been made: The heterogeneity of physical properties is strong in volcanic rocks whose porosity and permeability vary in different lithology and lithofacies; different rocks in a same well have various values of porosity and permeability, and a certain type of volcanic rock has different values of porosity and permeability in diverse wells. According to measured data, the value of porosity an permeability in erupting and effusive facies area are high, while in volcanic channel and extrusive facies as well as volcanic sedimentation facies are low. Unlike the clastic rocks, in volcanic rocks there is little relationship between porosity and permeability and all of them do not have close relationship to the buried depth. Different electrical responses have different relationship with the porosity of one certain lithology, while one certain electrical property has different responses for the porosities of different lithologies; comparatively speaking, the porosities of tuffites, breccia correlate intensively with GR, SP and AC, so these electrical parameters can be utilized to predict the physical properties. This study illustrated that the relativities between porosity and GR, AC, and SP are Por=-0.6189×GR+52.691 (R2=0.9311), Por =-0.3771×AC + 34.5 (R2=0.8876) and Por = 2.1458×SP + 79.404 (R2=0.8236).

This paper introduces the research status and analysis of the Multi-Extruded-Expanded-Plates pile (the MEEP pile) at home and abroad, by studying when the plate of pile embedded in different characteristics soil layer, the thickness, physical properties of upper and lower soil layer adjacent to the soil with plate cause the influence on soil break and bearing capacity of the soil layer with plate, analyzing the work together with pile and soil in different soil layer, providing a theoretical basis to improve the calculation formula of bearing capacity of single pile, ensuring the rationality and reliability of the design of the MEEP pile.

Abstract Clay is a cohesive material that varies in volume due to changes in humidity and temperature. Its behavior is studied with physical and geotechnical characterization of the material. The experimental analysis of the expansiveness of clays is related to plasticity, which depends on the expansive minerals it contains. The objective is to analyze the relationship between the plasticity index and the expansion capacity due to changes in humidity and temperature; various types of clay from San José de Cúcuta, Colombia, were studied. Liquid limit and plastic limit were analyzed with which the plasticity index was determined. The test tube free expansion and calcination were carried out at 1000 °C to determine the volumetric change due to humidity and temperature, respectively. The clays with plasticity index of 10% - 20% presented expansion by humidity of 5% - 10% and by calcination of 0% - 10%, which indicates low expansion; while the clay with plasticity index of 20% - 40% presented expansion by moisture of 20% - 50% and by calcination of 25% - 50%, which indicates moderately high expansion. The results show that there is a relationship between plasticity index and the expansion capacity due to changes in humidity and temperature.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, the study aims to investigate the relationship between the altmetric indicators from ResearchGate (RG) and the bibliometric indicators from the Scopus database. Second, the study seeks to examine the relationship amongst the RG altmetric indicators themselves. RG is a rich source of altmetric indicators such as Citations, RGScore, Impact Points, Profile Views, Publication Views, etc. Design/methodology/approach – For establishing whether RG metrics showed the same results as the established sources of metrics, Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated between the metrics provided by RG and the metrics obtained from Scopus. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were also calculated for the metrics provided by RG. The data were collected by visiting the profile pages of all the members who had an account in RG under the Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh (India). Findings – The study showed that most of the RG metrics showed strong positive correlation with the Scopus metrics, except for RGScore (RG) and Citations (Scopus), which showed moderate positive correlation. It was also found that the RG metrics showed moderate to strong positive correlation amongst each other. Research limitations/implications – The limitation of this study is that more and more scientists and researchers may join RG in the future, therefore the data may change. The study focuses on the members who had an account in RG under the Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh (India). Perhaps further studies can be conducted by increasing the sample size and by taking a different sample size having different characteristics. Originality/value – Being an emerging field, not much has been conducted in the area of altmetrics. Very few studies have been conducted on the reach of academic social networks like RG and their validity as sources of altmetric indicators like RGScore, Impact Points, etc. The findings offer insights to the question whether RG can be used as an alternative to traditional sources of bibliometric indicators, especially with reference to a rapidly developing country such as India.

In this paper adopting the orthogonal method, self-developed compound formulation had tested, and the relationship between the physical properties of vulcanized rubber and rectangular synchronous rotor mixer parameters had researched. The results showed that when the fill factor was 0.6, the rotor speed was 70r/min, cooling water temperature was 45 °C, pressure on the top bolt was 0.8Mpa, the physical properties of the vulcanized rubber was best.
