DYNAMIC SAFETY INTERACTIONS FOR IMPROVING QUALITY OF WORK LIFE: A PROPOSED CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR ENGINEERS IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES

In Malaysia’s manufacturing industry, workplace mishaps and injuries are a big problem. This industry has made only minor developments in terms of reducing fatalities and significant injuries. The fatality rate has decreased marginally; however, the previous year’s severe injury rate remains unchanged (Department of Occupational Safety and Health, 2021). In Malaysia’s aspiration into becoming an advanced country by 2020, reducing occupational mishaps and injuries is one of the key employments concerns it aims to address. As a substantial determinant of mishaps and safety behaviour, the perception of the work setting is considered essential. Safety measures must emphasise the way employees view their work setting in order to improve safety plans and practices. Safety policy and procedures must bring about a shift in employees’ mindsets and awareness of their immediate work setting in order to succeed in the intervention towards the shift in behaviour. This study proposes a conceptual framework to examine the interaction between safety climates, safety behaviour towards the quality of work-life, and psychological well-being within Malaysia’s manufacturing industry that would assist in the advancement of more efficient safety interventions of reducing mishaps.

Safety literature is in agreement regarding the effective role safety-specific leadership plays in occupational safety but most of these studies are limited to Western/American context. The current study looks to fill this void by testing safety-specific leadership effectiveness in Pakistani context. Data were collected from 163 workers of manufacturing industry. The results confirmed that safety-specific leadership strengthens followers safety climate perceptions and thereby negatively affects occupational injuries. Practical implications, future research directions and limitations of the study are also discussed.

This study aims to identify the impact of transformational leadership on the quality of work-life in telecommunications companies operating in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The researcher has employed the descriptive analytical approach to analyze the study data، the most important results reached in this study are: the overall average answers for the workers on transformational leadership comes high, with an arithmetic average (3.79) , while the quality of work-life has come to a medium degree with an arithmetic average (3.17). The study recommended that leaders in telecommunications companies should be encouraged to continue practicing the transformational leadership style because of its characteristics and practices that have an impact on the effectiveness of the company and taking into account the social and humanitarian aspects of workers.

PurposeManufacturing industry is quite badly hit due to the coronavirus. Manufacturing has been stopped in every country. The present study will provide assistance to the practitioners to recover manufacturing sector from the after-effects of coronavirus.Design/methodology/approachA thorough review of the recent articles published in the newspaper and web has been done to make a viewpoint on the global industrial impact due to epidemic corona. Reports of WHO, IMF, World Bank, RBI and so forth are also reviewed. Further, Lean Six Sigma has been suggested which can be implemented to recover manufacturing industry from the ill effects of corona.FindingsIn present study the problem causd in the manufacturing sector due to corona virus has been identified and a clinical treatment for the same has been proposed by using the tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma.Originality/valueThe impact of coronavirus has become a huge issue not only for the physical health of human beings but also for the economic health of most of the countries in the world, as it is pushing the world economy toward huge economic depression. Therefore, it becomes the moral responsibility of industrial experts to suggest the tools and techniques to the manufacturing industry for faster recovery.

Developing and encouraging a safety culture is an important factor to achieve a safe workplace with low injury rates. Safety climate can be an indicator of the status of an occupational health and safety management system in an organization. It can provide a snapshot of the safety culture. The Thai version of Nordic Occupational Safety Climate Questionnaire is used to evaluate the safety climate in the food manufacturing industry in Songkhla, Thailand. The results can also be used as a guideline in the development and safety management in the future. The response rate was great. The employees who participated were 14.7% male and 85.3% were female. Most subjects were 41-50 years-old and most had a 1- to 5-year working experience. The highest safety climate score of the workers was the dimension of “workers’ trust in the efficacy of safety systems” (3.29) while the lowest score was the dimension of “workers' safety priority and risk non-acceptance” (2.89). For the leaders, the highest safety climate score was the dimension of “workers’ safety commitment” (3.44) and the lowest score was the dimension of “management safety empowerment” (3.10). The factors related to accident occurrence were the differences in the organizations and the mean score of the safety climate dimension of “worker’s safety priority and risk non-acceptance”.  

Resumen: en este artículo se analizó el comportamiento de la adopción de las tecnologías de la información y comunicación en los subsectores manufactureros de Baja California, para determinar sus efectos en los resultados económicos y los cambios que generan en las empresas. Para ello se utilizaron seis dimensiones del modelo desarrollado por Karmarkar y Mangal (2004), y con la tau-b de Kendall se calculó la correlación entre el grado de adopción de dichas tecnologías y los resultados económicos. Aunque éstos no se compararon con los de otros estudios, puesto que aquí sólo se seleccionó cierto tipo de empresas, se logró exponer la situación del sector manufacturero estatal, en relación con el uso de las tecnologías. Por lo que se puede concluir que la adopción de éstas influye positivamente en los resultados de las empresas.Palabras clave: correlación; industrias manufactureras; industria-innovaciones tecnológicas; sector industrial; pequeña y mediana empresa; investigación cualitativa.  The impact of information and communication technologies on the manufacturing industry of Baja CaliforniaAbstract: this paper analyzes the performance of the adoption of information and communication technologies in manufacturing sub-sectors of Baja California in order to determine their effects on the economic results and the changes generated in the companies. For this purpose, six dimensions of the model developed by Karmarkar and Mangal (2004) were utilized, and using the Kendall’s tau-b the correlation between the level of adoption of such technologies and the economic results was calculated. Although these were not compared to those of other studies, since only certain types of companies were selected, the situation of state manufacturing sector was set out in relation to the use of these technologies. Therefore, it can be concluded that the adoption of such technologies has a positive influence on the performance of companies. Key words: correlation; manufacturing industries; industry-technological innovations; industrial sector; small and medium-sized enterprises; qualitative research.

The majority of South Africans expect greater prosperity that can be accomplished through greater employment, high productivity and wage increases. Increased productivity can finance higher wages without burdening the customer with higher selling prices. Consequently, there should be strong co-operation between management and labour to improve productivity, thereby ensuring the survival of South African companies. To achieve this objective, organisations find themselves turning to their employees for creative suggestions and ideas on better ways of doing things. This sentiment underpins the concept of gainsharing. Gainsharing is a formula-based company-wide programme that offers employees a share in the financial gains of a company as a result of its improved performance. This motivation boosts a company’s productivity and radically reduces the cost of waste, spoilage, rejects and rework. This study examined the impact of a gainsharing programme on the improvement of labour productivity in the automotive parts manufacturing sector. The study investigated the production and related experience of two automotive parts manufacturing companies (referred to as A and B in this study) that have adopted a gainsharing strategy. The two companies operate in the eThekwini District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. It assessed if gainsharing is responsible for company labour productivity improvements. The investigation was achieved by collecting pre- and post-gainsharing quarterly data for spoilage, absenteeism, capital investment and labour productivity. Gainsharing improves labour productivity and reduces spoilage and absenteeism rates. In order to maximise performance, a comprehensive performance policy must be developed, which aligns pay (and other incentives) to performance. The study uncovered the strengths and weaknesses of gainsharing for labour productivity improvement in South Africa.

This study was aimed at determining the impact of employee engagement on Organization Performance at work among employees of selected manufacturing units of Hyderabad. Employee engagement is about building a commitment among workforce. People are the most important and valuable asset of every organization. Organization should prefer to maximize involvement through maximizing their human relations. Research variables analyzed under study are Employee Engagement Factors, Satisfaction Levels and Culture diversity and organization performance at work as a dependent variable.  To collect required data, structured and reliable questionnaires were used which had been used in the previous studies. Then, questionnaires were implemented by Pilot-Study method and correlation coefficient obtained. The study focused on employee dimension which strengthens the concept of employee engagement in service industry. This paper is trying to throw the light of the various determinants focus on employee engagement in manufacturing sector with special reference to Hyderabad, Telangana. By utilization of simple percentage, weighted average and ANOVA statistical techniques using SPSS software have been used for data analysis. The results of hypotheses tests which calculated in confidence level 95% indicated that all research hypotheses were confirmed.

The purpose of the paper is to examine how family-friendly certificates introduced to pursue the compatibility of work and family life affect the financial performance of small and medium-sized manufacturers, and to provide useful information to companies considering the introduction of this system in the future. Methods/Statistical analysis: Since launching the family-friendly certification business, a total of 312 companies havereceived family-friendly certification in 2015, 38 of which are large companies, 99 public institutions and 175 small and medium-sized enterprises. Among 175 small and medium-sized companies that received family-friendly certification, 91 companies in the manufacturing sector were investigated for financial data from 2014 to 2017 and analyzed through the paired t-test using SPSS.

The chapter analyzes the impact of spiritual intelligence on leadership. The research includes both primary and secondary data. The data is collected through two surveys: SISRI 24 for measuring the spiritual intelligence and MLQ for measuring the leadership traits of the respondents. The research population consist of 15 corporate leaders varied from Banking to IT to manufacturing industry. The authors also included some university professors for their research and study. SPSS software was used to do statistical analysis. The data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics including mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum scores, correlation formula, and multiple regression analysis. The outcomes demonstrate noteworthy positive connections, both simple and multiple, between spiritual intelligence and transformational leadership style in the corporate leaders in different sectors. As spiritual intelligence is an applied aspect of spirituality; it is recommended that spirituality be strengthened in corporate leaders in order to improve their leadership.
