Foreword: This volume contains the abstracts and final program of the 6th International Conference on Data Science, Technologies and Applications - DATA 2017 held in Madrid, Spain from 24-26 July, 2017. DATA is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), co-organized by Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and held in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (ACM SIGKDD). This conference brings together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested on databases, big data, data mining, data management, data security and other aspects of information systems and technology involving advanced applications of data. The high quality of the DATA 2017 program is enhanced by the four keynote lectures, delivered by distinguished speakers who are renowned experts in their fields: Torben Bach Pedersen (Aalborg University, Denmark), Francesco Bonchi (ISI Foundation, Italy), Stefano Ceri (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) and Andreas Holzinger (Medical University Graz, Austria). The meeting is complemented with two special session: the Special Session on Knowledge Discovery meets Information Systems: Applications of Big Data Analytics and BI - methodologies, techniques and tools (KomIS) and the Special Session on Knowledge Discovery and Cloud Computing Applications (KDCloudApps). DATA 2017 received 66 paper submissions, including special sessions, from 28 countries of which 38% were accepted as full papers. In order to evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee. As in previous editions of the Conference, based on the reviewer’s evaluations and the presentations, selected authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer with the best papers of DATA 2017. The program for this conference required the dedicated effort of many people. Firstly, we must thank the authors, whose research efforts are herewith recorded. Next, we thank the members of the Program Committee and the auxiliary reviewers for their diligent and professional reviewing. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to prepare their talks. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the INSTICC team; organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. A successful conference involves more than paper presentations; it is also a meeting place, where ideas about new research projects and other ventures are discussed and debated. Therefore, a social event & banquet has been arranged for the evening of July 25th in order to promote this kind of social networking.
