Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Vehicle Technology and Intelligent Transport Systems (VEHITS 2016) which was organized and sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in cooperation with the Associação Brasileira do Veículo Elétrico (ABVE) and the Associação Portuguesa do Veículo Eléctrico. VEHITS focuses on innovative applications, tools and platforms in all technology areas such as signal processing, wireless communications, informatics and electronics, related to different kinds of vehicles, including cars, off-road vehicles, trains, ships, underwater vehicles, or flying machines, and the intelligent transportation systems that connect and manage large numbers of vehicles, not only in the context of smart cities but in many other application domains. This conference brought together researchers and practitioners interested in the advances and applications in the field of Vehicle Technology and Intelligent Transport Systems. It had four main topic areas, covering different aspects, including Intelligent Vehicle Technologies, Intelligent Transport Systems and Infrastructure, Connected Vehicles and Sustainable Transport. We believe these proceedings demonstrate new and innovative solutions and highlight technical problems in each field that are challenging and worthwhile. VEHITS 2016 received 49 paper submissions from 23 countries in all continents, of which 20% were accepted as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the VEHITS 2016 topic areas. The high quality of the VEHITS 2016 programme was enhanced by two keynote lectures, delivered by experts in their fields, including: Venkatesh Prasad (Ford Motor Company, United States) and Danil Prokhorov (Toyota Tech Center, United States). The meeting was also complemented with a tutorial on “Leveraging Vehicle Probe Data for Real-Time Management Decisions: A Case Study Review” lectured by Darcy Bullock and the Special Session on Simulation of flex fuel engines and alternative biofuel vehicles – SFFEV chaired by Carla Silva. All presented papers will be submitted for indexation by Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (ISI), INSPEC, DBLP, EI (Engineering Index) and Scopus, as well as being made available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. The best contributions to the conference and the best student submissions were distinguished with awards based on the combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as evaluated by session chairs at the conference venue. Building an interesting and successful program for the conference required the dedicated effort of many people. We would like to express our thanks, first of all, to all authors who submitted papers to VEHITS 2016. We would also like to express our gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. Furthermore, we thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to synthesize and prepare their talks. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes. (More)
