Composite pipes for hot water supply and heating.
Inner and outer layers polypropylene PPR with specific additives, glass fiber layer FB between them.
PPR-FB-PPR PN20 pipe (glass fiber middle layer)
The outer layer is made of polypropylene PPR, and the pipes may be connected with the ordinary welding equipment. The layer
contains specific additives that make the pipe ultraviolet resistant.
The middle layer of the new AQUART pipes is of composite polypropylene PPR and glass fiber FB. Such compound combination
makes the new AQUART pipes mechanically resistant and hot and cold water resistant.
In particular, in new AQUART pipes the problem of linear expansion has been solved: it is 4.5 times lower than that of the ordinary
polypropylene pipes. The glass fiber serves an oxygen barrier which makes it possible to use new AQUART pipes in individual
heating systems instead of reinforced pipes.
The third inner layer is made of propylene PPR, which guarantees sanitary standard in water supply application.

Table 1. The admissible liquid pressure in PPRC water piping system depending on
temperature and service life at safety margin 1.5 (according to DIN 8078)
NSTALLATOM TEOHNOUES
Design considerations and installation techniques need to be employed to ensure the efficient and safe
operation of the resulting pipework system. First of all, assumed application conditions prolonged temperature
impact and pressure of liquids - are to be considered.
Table 1 presents the service life of the PPRC water supplying systems, the data is based on the above
features according to DIN 8075 standard.

Hydraulic Design
Pipeline hydraulic design is the estimation of the total pressure loss (the loss of pressure in transported
liquids), which occurs as a result of hydraulic resistance in the pipe, as well as on the segments of sharp bends
and diameter changes, in fittings and hardware.
Hydraulic pressure loss in the pipe can be calculated according to nomograms, see pictures 1,2, and 3.

Polypropylene pipes have a higher thermal expansion rate and greater flexibility than metals. This fact should
be taken into consideration when designing water supplying systems, especially if pipes in hot water supplying
and heating systems are not reinforced with metal layers.
The linear expansion of PPR pipes is calculated according to the following formula: L = Lt, where L
- the change in length of pipe, mm; - the coefficient of linear expansion; L the original length of pipe, m; t
- temperature difference, .
For non-reinforced pipes the coefficient of thermal expansion is 0.15 mm / m C, while for reinforced piped
the coefficient is 0.03 mm / m C.
For example, on the segment of non-reinforced pipeline 6.5 m length the probable temperature variation is 20
75 C, so the length variation will be 0.15 mm/m C m 6.5 55 C = 54 mm.
The amount of pipe thermal expansion may also be determined by the nomograms (see pictures 1 and 2).
Thermal expansion of water supplying systems can be accommodated in the pipe bends. In case the thermal
compensation is not sufficient, square expansion compensators are equipped (see pictures 3 and 4).
Pic. 1. Nomogram for thermal expansion determination
of PN 10, PN20 pipes.
Some of the supports are made fixed they are anchor points:
they direct pipe movements through pipe clips to expansion
compensators.
Any pipe clip used in conjunction of polypropylene system
should allow free axial pipe movement and afford lateral restraint.
The principle is to control thermal movement by constraining the
pipe laterally. At the same time support must allow free axial
movement of the pipe. The direction of the pipe movement can
then be controlled by the use of axial restraints or anchor points at
strategic positions. As an anchor point you can fix two couplings, or
a coupling and a tee, at the both sides of the pipe. Do not fix anchor
support by pressing the pipe.

Pic. 4. Square expansion compensator
Necessary length of the flexible pipe segment of the compensator L
S
(see pic. 3 and 4) can be calculated by the
formula , where d is the outer diameter of the pipe, L the change in length of pipe.
Additional accommodation of the thermal movements of the pipe can be gained by the preliminary stressing
of the pipe in the desired direction. To accommodate the pressured pipe segment the flexible segment L
S
can be
made 30% shorter.
The accommodation of PPR pipes extension can be gained by the preliminary bending of pipes and installing
them in the wavy way on the solid support, which should be wide enough to let the pipeline bend change the form
when the temperature changes.
Pic. 5. Nomogram for the flexible segment Ls length determination.
When installing the PPRC water supplying system into the concrete or plaster, the additional expansion
compensators are not necessarily required. Nevertheless, if the length of the pipe is over 2 meters, it is recommended
to place a layer of elastic material (thermal insulation, for instance) between the pipe and the wall.

The main method of jointing polypropylene elements is the spigot-and-faucet welding.
For jointing PPRC piping systems with metal components, combined fittings with embedded threaded parts,
couplings with nuts, or flanges are used. In case of joining with the help of couplings with nuts and flanges, plastic
faucet with shoulder should be welded to the pipe.
You can use hacksaw or other sharp instrument to cut pipe segments, but it is more preferable to apply special
scissors and cutters. For different pipe diameters special types of these tools developed. The cut off should be
made at right angle strictly, the contortion is inadmissible. The contortion of the pipe means that your instrument
is not sharp enough. You should clear burrs off the sheared edges, you may use the cuter or the knife.
Spigot-and-faucet welding
The welded parts should be prepared carefully. It is strongly recommended to cut off the both ends of the
pipes at angle 30 45C, especially when pipes with diameter 40 mm and more are used. It is also advisable to
scrape off the edge outer layer for about 0.1 mm at the jointing places of the pipes with big diameters. Damaged
and cracked pipes can not to be used. If the pipe and the fitting can be joined easily when not heated, they should
not be used.
The common rule for spigot-and-faucet jointing is that the inner diameter of the unheated faucet part should
be just a little smaller than the outer diameter of the pipe. The same rule concerns the welding adaptors as well:
they should not fix easily with the welded parts in cool state; in the process of welding the adaptor and the welded
component should be closely connected. The parts that do not meet the requirements can not be used!
Welding parts should be cleaned in the joint area from any kind of dirt and degreased with the help of spirit or
specific cleaner. Mark the depth of welding according to the table bellow. Remove metal layer from the reinforced
pipe with the help of grinding instrument.
You may heat the pipe with the drier to remove the aluminum layer easier.
Fix the welding dies of proper diameters the bushing and the draw bar on the welding machine. Switched
to the power supply socket machine warms up to essential working temperature (260
o
C) automatically. You can
settle the heat regulator on the desired temperature if necessary.
Welding itself is the jointing of two parts when they are already heated in the machine. Put the pipe into the
heating bushing and the spigot part on the draw bar. The process should be done smoothly; radial rotation is
prohibited. Pipe axis line should not deviate from the bushing axis line by more than 5 degrees.

Pic. 6. Basic operations of butt fusion: cutting, heating, connecting.
For welding pipes with big diameters (more than 40 mm) and length above 2 meters, apply specific welding
device with centrator to gain coaxiality of the jointing.
After the stipulated heating time remove the welded parts and join them immediately. Push the pipe into the
faucet up to the end of the welded area. Do not turn the jointing and keep the coaxiality of the parts. Note: a pipe
pushed too deep into the faucet can trample and reduce the inner section. As a result of overheating, the pipe
diameter may become too narrow, and the fitting diameter may increase.
It is recommended to keep the parts fixed strongly for about welding time. Do not align the parts or use cold
water during the cooling time. After the cooling time the jointing may be used under moderate mechanical stress.
The piping system may be filled with water in 1 hour after welding.
A well-done jointing may have the axial deviation of the pipe and fitting below 5C. There should not be cracks,
or folds, or other damages caused by overheating on the faucet part; there should be even all-round bead of
welded plastic material around joint.
Polypropylene pipes welding should be held at ambient temperature 0 C or higher. Prevent welded connection
from dust and atmospheric precipitates.
The ambient temperature during the mounting is very important. You should increase the welding
time in cold conditions (up to 50% when the temperature is about 5C) and decrease the time when
it is hot. Consider also the cooldown of the surface of the welding machine. It is the best to use heat
signal light to make sure that the welding surface temperature has reached 2605 .
Welding dies and welding machine should be kept clean. Remove the left over material with the help of rough
napkin, avoid damaging of teflon surface of welding dies.
Thermal insulation should be installed on the heating systems, laid in non-heated buildings; in the place
s of possible freezing of the heater; in artificially cooled rooms; for the purpose of preventing scalds and
condensation.
Polypropylene material has rather low thermal conductivity, thus PPRC pipes require less insulation material
than metal pipes. For example, PN20 pipe will have 53 surface temperature as a result of transporting water at
temperature 80 for a continuous time.

PPR WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM
Prevent PPRC pipes and fittings from impacts and mechanical shocks. During transportation the packs of
pipes should be stored flat on firm level ground. Protect them from sharp metal angles and edges of the transport
platform.
Transportation, loading and off-loading of polypropylene pipes should be held at ambient temperature not
lower than -10 . If special safe support handles are used, pipes can be transported at temperature below -
20C. The delivered pipes and fittings should be kept at place for about 2 hours at temperature above zero.
Polypropylene pipes and fittings are to be stored inside or sheltered from ultraviolet radiation with min
temperature 5. They should be kept in their boxes or package until ready for use. Do not store them together
with solvents, oil-paints, and like substances.
Pipes should be stored on shelves or other firm surfaces excluding pipe sagging. The height of the bundle of
pipes should not exceed 1 meter height. The bundle must be stored at one-meter distance from heating bodies.
Protect PPRC pipes and fittings from strikes
and mechanical shocks.
Damaged pipes can not be used.
For bending the pipe use hot air only, maximum
bending temperature 140
o
C.
Never heat with open flame!
Before welding PPRC pipes and fittings get sure
they are not damaged or cracked or dirty.

pipes in individual
heating systems instead of reinforced pipes.
The third, inner pipe layer is made of polypropylene (PPR), which guarantees
the compliance with the sanitary norms in using the pipes in water supply
systems.
New AQUART
pipes installation does not differ from the installation of polypropy-lene pipes the same equipment
and skills are required. New AQUART
Group.
At present time pipes PN-16, PN-20, PN-25 with diameters from 16 to 160 are presented.
1. Improvedmechanicalresistibility.
The essential difference of the new pipes is their good mechanical resistibility even under high temperatures. On
the diagram below you see the advantages of the new pipes over the pipes of other materials PPR-FB-PPR pipes can
bear much higher pressures, and with the growth of temperatures this ability does not
decrease so sharply as with other types of pipes.
2.Improvedpressureresistance
Scientific tests have proved that PPR-FB-PPR pipes reveal high pressure resistance
and the coefficient of resistance is 25% higher than of ordinary polypropylene pipes.
3.Betterthermalresistance.
The new PPR-FB-PPR pipes can stand the rise of temperature up to 145C, which is 30
degrees higher than with ordinary polypropylene pipes. This quality meets the American
standard ASTM D-646 Lab. Such a variety of working temperatures makes it possible to
use the new pipes in hot countries, as well as in countries with cold climate.
4.Ultra-violetprotection.
Specific additives included into polypropylene in the process of extrusion protect the
outer layer from ultra-violet radiation; ordinary polypropylene pipes lack this feature.
Such peculiarity makes it possible to use the new pipes much longer and to install them outside the buildings.
5.Lowthermalexpansion
coeffcient.
Thermal expansion coefficient of this
pipe is 4 times lower than that of ordinary
PPR pipes.
