Lovelyprofessional University: Tutorial - Bars of Varying Cross Section SOM MEC040 Time Required: 60 Minutes

This document provides a tutorial on calculating stresses and elongations in steel bars of varying cross sections under different loading conditions. It contains 6 problems involving determining stresses in individual parts of stepped bars, calculating total elongations, relating contraction to applied load, and deriving relationships for elongation. Solutions are provided for each of the 6 problems involving bars and pillars made of steel and reinforced concrete.

TUTORIAL Bars of varying cross section MEC040

LOVELYPROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY
SOM Time required: 60 minutes

1) A steel bar 20 mm diameter is loaded as shown in Fig. Determine the stresses in

each part.

2) A steel bar of 25 mm diameter is loaded as shown in Fig. Calculate the stress in

each portion and the total elongation. Take E = 200 GPa.

3) A stepped bar is loaded as shown in Fig. Calculate the stress in each part and
total elongation. E = 200 GPa.

4) A pillar is shown in Fig. The total contraction of the pillar is 0.25 mm. If ES=200
GPa and EC=120 GPa, find the value of load P.

5) A short reinforced concrete column has 600 cm2 area of cross-section. The
column reinforced with 4 steel rods arranged symmetrically, each having 102 cross-sectional area. The column is subjected to an axial load of 800 kN having ES= 200GPa and EC =20 GPa. Calculate the load shared by concrete and steel. 6) Derive a relation for calculating total elongation in bar of varying section?
