Excavation 1) All excavation work should be planned and the method of excavation and the type of support work

required should be decided considering the following: The stability of the ground; The excavation will not affect adjoining buildings, structures or roadways; To prevent hazard, the gas, water, electrical and other public utilities should be shut off or disconnected, if necessary; Presence of underground pipes, cable conductors, etc.; The position of culvert/bridges, temporary roads and soil heaps should be determined. 2) Work permit should be taken for excavation of more than 1.5m and confined space permit should also be taken for excavation in trenches having depth more than width & width less than 4.6m. 3) Sides of excavations should be monitored regularly. 4) Safe angle of repose should be given while excavating trenches exceeding 1.5m depths, except hard rock or soft rock, provide proper shoring and strutting to prevent cave-in or slides. 5) Excavated earth should not be placed within one meter of the edge of the trench or depth of trench whichever is greater. 6) Dont allow vehicles to operate too close to excavated area. No load, plant or equipment should be placed or moved near the edge of any excavation where it is likely to cause its collapse and thereby endanger any person unless provision of shoring or piling are taken to prevent the sides from collapsing. 7) Barricading should be provided to prevent vehicles being driven into the excavation. Heavy vehicles should not be allowed near the excavation unless the support work has been specially designed to permit it. 8) Barricade excavations beyond 1.5m depths. Provide entries / exits for such excavation. 9) Precautions should be taken for underground utility lines like cables sewers etc. 10) In case of mechanized excavation, precaution shall be taken to not to allow anybody to come within one meter of extreme reach of the mechanical shovel. Experienced operator shall operate the mechanized excavator. When not in operation the machine shall be kept on firm leveled ground with mechanical shovel resting on ground. Wheel or belt shall be suitably jammed to prevent any accidental movement of the machine. 11) In case of blasting certified blaster should be deployed.
