    MARPOL 73/78 :

    POLLUTION REGULATION ANNEX 5 OF THE MARPOL TREATY IS AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION PROVIDING FOR A CLEANER, SAFER, MARINE ENVIRONMENT. IT IS THEREFORE ILLEGAL FOR ANY VESSEL TO DUMP PLASTIC GARBAGE INCLUDING SYNTHETIC ROPES ,FISHING NETS, & GARBAGE BAGS ANYWHERE IN THE OCEANS OR NAVIGABLE WATERS. VIOLATION OF THESE REQUIREMENTS MAY RESULT IN CIVIL PENALTIES BEING IMPOSED UPON OFFENDERS IN THE FORM OF FINES AND OR IMPRISONMENT,AS DETERMINED BY A CURRENT NATIONAL LEGISLATION. GARBAGE MUST BE DISPOSED OF AS DESCRIBED IN THE SHPS GARBAGE MANAGEMENT PLANS & DETAILS OF ALL GARBAGEDISPOSAL MUST BE KEPT IN GARBAGED RECORD BOOK. 1. WITH IN 3 NAUTICAL MILES OF NEAREST LAND ,ALL INLAND WATERS & FROM OR W/IN 500 METER OR FIXED OR FLOATING PLATFORMS YOU CANNOT THROW ANYTHING OVERBOARD. 2. WITH IN 3 12 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE a). YOU CANNOT THROW OVERBOARD : PAPER, CROCKERY, RAGS, METALS, GLASS, FOODS, PLASTIC, DUNNAGE & LININGS & PACKING MATERIALS THAT FLOAT. b). YOU CAN THROW OVERBOARD PAPER, CROCKERY, RAGS, METALS, GLASS, FOODS, ETC PROVIDED IT IS GROUND TO LESS THAN 25mm. 3. WITH IN 12 -25 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE : a). YOU CANNOT THROW PLASTIC, DUNNAGE, LINING, & PACKING MATERIALS THAT FLOAT. b). YOU CAN THROW PAPER, CROCERY, RAGS, METAL, GLASS, FOODS ETC. 4. OUTSIDE 25 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE : YOU CANNOT THROW OVERBOARD PLASTC. IN EACH CASE PLASTIC INCLUDES,BUT NOT LIMITED TO SYNTHETIC ROPE, NETS, PLASTIC GARBAGE BAGS. NOTES ; IN SPECIAL AREAS LISTED BELOW ,IT IS ILLEGAL TO DISCHARGED GARBAGE OF ANY KIND. ( EXCEPT FOR FOODWASTE GROUND TO LESS THAN 25mm W/C MAYBEDISCHARGE BEYOND 12 MILES OFFSHORE. SPECIAL AREAS : 1. THE MEDITTERANEAN SEA AREAS 2. THE BALTIC SEA AREA 3. THE BLACK SEA AREA 4. THE RED SEA AREA 5. THE GULF AREA 6. THE NORTH SEA AREA 7. THE ANTARTIC AREA 8. AND THE WIDER CARRIBEAN DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EXTENTS OF THESE SPECIAL AREAS MAYBE FOUND IN REGULATION 5 OF ANNEX 5 OF MARPOL 73/78, ADDITIONALLY FURTHER LOCAL REGULATIONS MAY APPLY IN VARIOUS NATIONAL WATERS. EXAMPLE : THE GREAT LAKES AREA, CERTAIN ARES AROUND THE UNITED KINGDOM, & NORTH EASTERN COAST OF AUSTRALIA. PLS NOTE: ALL GARBAGE DISCHARGE MUST BE RECORDED IN THE GARBAGE RECORD BOOK.
