index of protection (IP Rating)

The IP rating system provides a means of determining the degree of protection against dust, water and impact afforded by electrical equipment and enclosures. The system is recognised in most European countries (IEC529, BS EN 60529: 1992) Details are also given for a third figure which, while not specified in many British Standards, it is used in most corresponding international standards.
