They learn English as a second language because they live in an English-speaking country. About 375 million people across the world use English as a second language. In India, for example, there are over 350 different languages, so people often use English to communicate with each other.

a
Listen to three British teenagers and follow in your book. Are they like teenagers in your country?
Jane Barker
Are todays teenagers really lazy, rude and unhelpful? I talked to forty teenagers and their parents. I wanted to find out if they got on well.
Gemma
I dont think Im a rebel. I dont often argue with my parents. In fact, my mums my closest friend. People think teenagers are lazy, but Im not lazy. I work hard at school and Ive got a weekend job too.
Most of the teenagers said that they werent rebels. For example, Gemma, aged 14, said that she didnt often argue with her parents. She said her mother was her closest friend. Sixteen-year-old Dave told me that he certainly wasnt lazy. He said that he worked hard at school and he had a weekend job too. Several teenagers told me they werent happy at home, but they also said their families were important to them. Donna, aged 15, said that she couldnt talk to her parents about problems because they didnt understand her. But she said it didnt worry her because she didnt spend much time at home!
Dave
I cant talk to my parents about problems. They dont understand me. But it doesnt really worry me, because I dont spend much time at home.

Central Park
Central Park, in Manhattan, is a popular place for people in New York to meet, hang out and have fun. New Yorkers say that the 843-acre park is their own front garden, where they can relax and escape from the noise of one of the busiest cities in the world. There are lots of things to do in the e park. You can play games, go jogging, cycling, horse-riding, or rollerblading, or simply sunbathe on the grass. You can visit the Metropolitan Museum, and theres even a zoo! There are 58 miles of paths to explore, but dont worry if you get tired; you can have a rest on one of the 9,000 benches. . There are outdoor concerts and plays and, if you want something to eat, there are some great restau urants, like The Tavern on the G reen. Central Park is famous all over the world and around 25 million people visit it each year.
Life a cultu nd re
Think of a big park that you know. What can you do there?
, the park However, hasnt always been so popular. When it opened, in 1858, only rich people used it. Poor people said it was too expensive to get there. When transport became cheaper, the park became more po opular and, in 1926, the first playground was built. But in the 1960s and 1970s the park became dirt ty and dangerous, so people didnt want to go there. Then, in 1980, an organisation called The Centr ral Park Conservancy took control and everything changed. They spent millions of dollars on the park k. They planted trees and added a lot of new attractions. Now there are 21 playgrounds and theres even a skating rink. It costs $20 million a year to look after Central Park, but most people agree that its worth it.
