ROBOTICS

INTRODUCTION
The Robot Institute of America defines a robot as a programmable, multifunction manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools or specific devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks.
Robotics is design and manufacture of intelligent machines

that are programmed to perform specific tasks. They are generally designed to be a helping hand. Robots are machines that can be programmed to perform a variety of jobs and can range from simple machines to complex ,computer controlled intelligent systems.

We can see this by considering the five properties of environments:

The real world is INACCESSIBLE

Sensors are imperfect and in any case can only perceive stimuli that are near the agent.
The real world is DYNAMIC.

Therefore a robot has to know when it is worth deliberating and when it is better to act immediately.
The real world is NON EPISODICThe effects of an action change over time. So a robot has to handle sequential decision problems and learning.

PARTS OF ROBOTS
The five musts in a Robot : Controller Every robot is connected to a computer which keeps the pieces of the arm working

together. This computer is known as the Controller. Controller also allows robot to be networked to other systems,so that it may work in collaboration with other machines. The majority of robots today are entirely programmed.

PARTS OF ROBOTS
Arm
Robot arms comes in all shapes & sizes. The arm is that part of the robot which positions

the end-effecter & sensors to do their preprogrammed business. A simple robot arm with three degree of freedom could move in three ways:up&down, left&right, forward&backward.

PARTS OF ROBOTS
Drive
The drive is the enginethat drives the

links(sections between the joints)into their desired positions.

Without a drive a robot is as good as dead. Most

drives are powered by air,water,pressure.

PARTS OF THE ROBOTS

End-effector It is the handconnected to the robots arm. It could be a tool such as scalpel, gripper that helps it to do its job. Some robots can change end-effectors and be reprogrammed for a different set of tasks.

PARTS OF THE ROBOTS

Sensor Robots without sensors are deaf &blind . Sensors provide limited feedback to the robot & aid in performing the job. They send information in the form of electric signals back to the controller, letting it to know about the state of the world around it.

WHAT ARE ROBOTS GOOD FOR?

In this section we survey some of the tasks.
MANUFACTURING AND MATERIALS HANDLING The robots used for material handling likewise vary from tabletop manipulators to gantry cranes and include many types of AGV (Autonomous Guided Vehicles). HAZARDUOUS ENVIRONMENTS Robots are used for routine maintenance of nuclear plants. Robots can reduce risk to humans in unstable buildings after earthquake, near fire or toxic fumes and in radioactive environments TELEPRESENCE AND VIRTUAL REALITY As computers spread from scientific/business applications to a consumer technology, telepresence and virtual reality continued to captivate the public imagination. Realistic virtual environments require object models with a full set of physical attributes

Types of Robot
AROBOT Mobile robot for hobbyists
Arobot is a completely programmable mobile robot with an onboard processor, whisker sensors, LEDs, speaker and buttons for user input.

Trilobot- mobile robot for research

Trilobot is a full-featured platform for the serious robot enthusiast or research project. Trilobot utilizes 3 processors for distributed control of motor and sensor control. All-metal construction with pan-tilt head, gripper, and differential drive motors and sensors galore

Robot building for dummies

For the tinkerer in all of us - Robot Building for Dummies gives you a solid understanding of robotics with a decidedly hands-on method

Gofer robots
Mobile robots (moots) are also becoming widely useful. Two primary applications are as couriers in buildings, especially hospitals and as security guards

THE ANDROIDS
Anything on robotics will be incomplete without a reference to ANDROIDS.
Androids is a robot with the shape & abilities of

a humans.
Androids can be said to be the ultimate in instrumentation&control engineering. The first question that comes to our mind iswhy copy humans? Androids will help us enjoy life by relieving us of many of the mundane tasks.

ANDROIDS
The most striking outcome is Asimo from Honda.

ASIMO boasts of a unique approach to autonomous locomotion. In short , androids will be a new species of humans.

WHAT LIES AHEAD..

ROBOTS are no longer just the characters of

sci-fi movies. In real world they are redefining manufacturing, medicine, exploration(space&un derwater). Robotics has the potential to change our economy, health ,standard of living, knowledge and all the world we live in. As technology processes we are finding newer ways to leverage robotics.
