Vasquez 1 Angelique Vasquez Professor Susan Lago English 1100-41 14 November, 2013 Share a Vision.

Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education. Child neglecting is an uneasy subject to talk about and to stop. According to Rovis article, in the United States, it is estimated that over 800,000 children are abused or neglected annually (Rovi). Thousands of children are being abused at home then put into insufficient foster care where they are also abused and neglected. As one critic points out, the United States has among the worst records among industrialized nations losing on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). Unfortunately this work of line of stopping child abuse is difficult because for most of the children who in the past have been or are currently being abused, have been trained to not rat out their family members or caregivers for abusing and neglecting them. There is no question that the prevention of child abuse is easier said than done but it is indeed a work in process. The goal is to strengthen all neighborhoods whether poor or rich and the families within them for the better of the children now and the ones to come. Family violence is a major social problem as well as a public health issue. Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). In the past DYFS was charged with being poorly managed, overburdened, and underfunded conditions that threatened the health and safety of children in the care of the state. Years of poor management and consistent underfunding went on and on along with insufficient

Vasquez 2 placements for children in the foster care system. As Brenner goes on to explain about child welfare, he points out that the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 has made child safety an explicit focus in child welfare (Brenner). But it is clear that still today the welfare programs/servicers do not all meet efficient levels. Mechanisms are needed to look carefully through and evaluate the safety of the children and develop appropriate responses when their safety is at stake. The best way to prevent child mistreatment is to help the parents develop the skills and identify the resources they need to understand and meet their children's emotional, physical and developmental needs and how to protect their children from harm. All this can feel overwhelming for any parent and when parents lack this support or feel isolated, they may be more likely to make poor decisions that can lead to neglect or abuse. This is why it is very important to further develop programs where both the child and parents/care givers can receive the help they need to strengthen their family. Younger children do not quite understand the terms or the affects of abuse and being neglected will actual have on them till they have reached their adolescence years or later on in their adult lives. I have found some child ware information that states, Children who experience child abuse and neglect are about nine times more likely to become involved in criminal activity (Long- Term Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect). If the children that are being abused are not helped their chances of having a successful future is at jeopardy. To prevent any more child abuse, programs such as; family-nurturing program, mentoring program, home health visiting program should be developed and those programs existing should be improved. The already existing child welfare agencies should monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of the children in foster care. Ariel Alvarez explains that in the United States, the protection of children against abuse and neglect is primarily the responsibility of state child welfare agencies

Vasquez 3 (Alvarez). To improve the coordination among intergovernmental organizations and private child-serving agencies would be required. The programs will maximize existing resources of child welfare providers such as DYFS as well as reducing service fragmentation. With the improvement of intergovernmental organizations and child-serving agencies, programs will be developed and there would be local meetings and all the family members should be required to attend the weekly sessions. Nothing less than long-term outcomes should be except of these programs that will reduce stress and social isolation of families living in these neighborhoods. The programs would enhance their support networks and strengthens their ability to nurture their children. These workshops will improve family relations, increase communication skills and self-esteem. It will also reduce reliance on harsh punishment, and improve parental understanding of appropriate expectations for children.
