Considers the pattern of organization

Pattern of organization is the order of the information and how it is laid out within a document. Topic and audience analysis determine which pattern is best.

Contains text, graphics, or both

Technical writing is about getting the point across, while also adding design elements. Graphs or visuals either aid in the explanation, or add visual appeal.

Considers Culture
Technical writing is not limited to the United States. In technical writing, consider and research cultural differences between writing styles.

Uses clear and concise sentence structure

A well-written technical document is one in which the sentences are accurate, clear, and concise. Misunderstandings may lead to added costs for a company.

Uses design elements

Technical writing is also about visual appeal. Color, font size, typeface, and layout should all be considered when producing a document.

Convinces the audience to act or believe differently after reading

Technical writing has a purpose other than convincing the reader you have learned the assigned topic, as with academic writing. In technical writing the task may vary, but the document should convince the reader to think or behave differently.

Produced collaboratively with others

Collaboratively working with others is an aspect of technical writing. In some projects, many people produce a single document, which is unlike academic writing.

Guides a reader through a document

Technical writing lays out a document so the reader has an idea of where to go. Utilization of white space and keeping an open layout guides the reader throughout the document.
