Perspective

Grade: 2nd Grade Big Idea: Perspective Essential Question: Why is it that when me and my friend saw the same thing, when we tell the event to someone else we will have different stories on what happened?

GLCES and Common Core 2 H2.0.2 Explain why descriptions of the same event in the local community can be different. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1a Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1b Build on others talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1c Ask for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.4 Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.

Objectives: Students will be able to compare and contrast different points of view. Students will be able to show that people have different perspectives because they have different roles. Students will be able to contribute to our classroom discussion using the rules that we have set up and by clearly expressing what they are thinking. Students will be able to listen to other students and build on-top of their conversation. Students will be able to recount an experience from their past to share inside class. Students will ask for help when they need it.

Anticipatory set:

Skit: Conversation between teacher and student. The students mom throw away his homework by accident this morning, the teacher does not believe him. (students can decided to improvise) Student: Mrs. Bee, my mom threw away my homework this morning. Mrs. Bee: Im sorry but I have heard that excuse to many times. You know the rules if you turn it in tomorrow you can still receive 80% credit on it. Student: But Mrs. Bee thats not fair, I did complete my homework. Mrs. Bee: Im sorry but you know the rules. I cannot make an exception for you. Student: But Mrs. Bee: No buts, know please return back to your seat. Student: Yes, Mrs. Bee. (Returns back to seat) o When the students have finished the skit, one will go into the hallway, while the other stays to tell his point-of view of what just happened. I will write down notes on a piece of paper. Next, I will have the other student come into the room, while the other student stays in the hallway. Hiding the response of the other student, I will write down this students point of view. After this both students will stay inside the classroom. o After all of this I will write on the board what both of the students have said about what occurred from their perspective. o As a class we will talk about how this could have happened.

Input/Modeling/Checking for understanding: Parents vs. Children o Do you ever disagree with your parent? o Why do you think this happens? o Choose one story from a student: How were you feeling, thinking? How do you think your mom was thinking? Have everyone try to see what the students mom was thinking. Help them see her point of view o What is this called when to people are thinking different things? Have students guesses. Introduce the word perspectives and as a class research its meaning. Different points of view on a topic or event.

Current event o Fire We will talk in a group about the fire that happened. Who was affected? o How do you think they are feeling? Who put the fire out? o How do you think they are feeling? Two books: Perspectives o firemens perspective How did this book talk about fires? (we will create a diagram) o Effected perspective How did this book talk about fires? (We will had to our diagram) We will talk about how these perspectives are similar and different. As a class we will categorize them. As a class will discuss why their views are different. (aka: different roles) What causes different perspectives o As a class, we will talk about how people have different perspectives because they have different roles.

Guided Practice In class, I will have an event. For example a hurricane. The students will be given different roles. Like a citizen vs. a storm chaser. o Students will be grouped into pairs. They will discuss inside their group how they would respond to an event based on their role. o When they are done, groups will share how they would react. o After this we would note the differences between the two perspectives. Individually students will either share with the teacher, make something, or write a sentence explain what causes different perspectives. I will collect these to see if the students learned the objectives. At the end of class, we will discuss our main topic again. And we will answer this question as a group, How can understanding that people have different perspectives change how you talk with others?
