In 1518 Spain’s governor in Cuba asked
Cortes to help him set up a post on the
Mexican mainland to claim land, look for
gold, and begin trade
The governor changed his mind, but Cortes
went anyway
Malintzin the Interpreter
Malintzin was a Native American princess
who spoke both Nahuatl (language of the
Aztecs) and the Mayan language
She also learned Spanish
