1519 Montezuma learned that the Spanish
were in the Gulf of Mexico

take over)

He arrived to the Aztec lands searching for GOLD

In 1518 Spain’s governor in Cuba asked
Cortes to help him set up a post on the
Mexican mainland to claim land, look for
gold, and begin trade
The governor changed his mind, but Cortes
went anyway
Malintzin the Interpreter
Malintzin was a Native American princess
who spoke both Nahuatl (language of the
Aztecs) and the Mayan language
She also learned Spanish

Claimed Mexico for Spain and the Roman
Catholic Church

Montezuma became more and more fearful
He sent gifts of gold, which only made the
Spaniards more eager
Cortes in Tenochtitlan
Arrived in 1519, received grand welcome
Montezuma offered Cortes the Aztec empire,
however Cortes feared it might be a trap
He seized Montezuma and held him captive
for months
They took Aztec gold jewelry and other items
and melted them into gold bars (today worth
$8M)
A New Spanish Ally: Disease
Montezuma became unpopular and was
killed in a revolt
After his death, the Aztecs united and drove
the Spanish out
After the Spaniards were driven out disease
struck the city (probably smallpox or
measles)
They had no immunities to the disease
The Final Conquest
Cortes returned 10 months later
The Aztecs were no match in battle for the
Spaniards
Aztec surrendered in 1521
Cortes renamed Tenochtitlan Mexico City
