01 Homework

This document contains instructions for an assignment due on January 10th for a ChemE 480 course. It includes 5 questions related to control systems and process optimization. Question 1 asks for examples of control systems and their elements. Question 2 and 3 refer to sections in a textbook. Question 4 involves drawing a process diagram for a system with heat exchangers and flash drum, and identifying variables, sensors, and control elements. Question 5 is a optimization problem involving maximizing profit from blending two crude oils based on their yields and product limitations.

Due 1/10/14!

ChemE 480!

Assignment #1

1.(2)! Provide at three examples of control systems in everyday life. Identify the elements of the system. 2.(2)! SEMD 1.3 3.(2)! SEMD 1.7 4.(8)! Consider a system consisting of two heat exchangers are heating a uid which then goes to a ash drum for a phase split. The liquid from the ash drum is drawn off by a pump. a) b) c) d) e) f) Draw a picture of the system What are the variables to be controlled in the system? What sensors will you need? What nal control elements will you need? How will you determine the size of the equipment? Select control pairings, i.e., select which measured variable will control which manipulated variable

5.(8)! Logistics and Optimization: A renery has available two crude oils that have the yields shown in the following table. Because of equipment and storage limitations, production of gasoline, kerosene, and fuel oil must be limited as also shown in this table. There are no plant limitations on the production of other products such as gas oils.
Crude #1 Volume % Yield Crude #2 Volume % Yield Maximum Product Level (bbl)

Gasoline Kerosene Fuel Oil

70 6 24

31 9 60

14,000 2,000 12,000

The prot on processing crude No. 1 is $1.10/bbl and on crude No. 2 it is $0.70/bbl. Find the approximate optimum daily feed rates of the two crude oils to this plant. (Hint: you can graphically solve this problem, amount of Crude #1 on one axis, Crude #2 on the other. Then plot the constraint equations, e.g, Gasoline limit and determine the maximum prot).
