Precipitating factors include smoking, residence at high altitude, closely spaced pregnancies, and tobacco or cocaine use. In placenta previa, the placenta implants in the lower uterine segment. As the uterus grows during pregnancy, the placenta can completely cover the cervix. This can lead to painless vaginal bleeding during labor as the cervix dilates and the placenta separates
