LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading: This week we will be reading about different systems and ideas from ancient Greece as well as a number of Guided Reading stories. We are hoping to have our RAZ KIDS online reading program up and running by Thursday this week. Spelling: In class, we are studying words with magic e. Words their Way, our individualized spelling program, is suited to your childs needs in spelling and will focus on either initial/final sounds, short vowels, long vowels, digraphs, other vowels, blends or inflected endings. Spelling test on Thursday!

INQUIRING ABOUT ANCIENT GREEK IDEAS


AND

SYSTEMS

This week will be actively learning about the ancient Greek ideas of the Olympics and Theatre (structure and format) as well as the transportation system within Greece. We will be comparing these ancient ideas and systems to what they are today. Students will be participating in a Grade 1 Olympic challenge event using math measuring skills and social skills. Students will also develop and participate in drama this week making a theatre play. We could use your help: We need some supplies for the building of their ancient and modern transportation system on Tuesday for as well as supplies for their big summative assessment project next week (a contrast diorama of an ancient and modern idea or system). Supplies needed: Clay Construction paper of various colors Tape clear Straws Foam paper Tissue paper in various colors Boxes x 2 shoe size or larger Poster paper thick card in white Glue sticks (we are short of these) Clean Plastic bottles - 1 litre or 500 ml size

Words their Way Reminder: Sunday Sorting sounds by cutting and


pasting them into categories in the homework book.

Monday Spelling word list comes home

for writing. Students practice writing the


words in their books, students should chose 2 words to put into an interesting sentence.

Tuesday Students make sense of these

words by finding them in the world around them. They practice the spelling list words in their book and then they can be word detectives and find these words in story books, newspapers, magazines, etc. They can cut them out and stick them in their homework book.

MATH

Wednesday Students practice the


spelling list in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Writing and Grammar: We will be focusing on creating complete sentences in our Weekend News free write. We will also be learning about past and present verbs to be able to use in our writing about ancient Greece.

We are comparing numbers in math using weight and money. Please review basic addition and subtraction math facts with your child as well as the concepts taught daily. Remember that www.everydaymathonline.com is a great resource of games and support to enhance your childs math skills.
