TAU EMPIRE
AMENDMENTS
Note that this is an older Codex, written for a previous edition of the rules. You will therefore need to consult the Reference section of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook for an up to date list of Unit Types and Vehicle Hull Points. Youll also find that some of the weapons in this Codex are written out longhand, rather than using the weapon profile format in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. Dont worry these are functionally identical, unless noted otherwise in this document. Two Toughness Values Where a model has two Toughness values presented on its profile, one of which is presented in brackets, always use the bracketed value. Ignore the other value entirely. Various Target Priority. Ignore all references to Target Priority and target Priority Tests. Page 24 Strategy Rating, Sentries, Experience. Ignore these entries. Page 25 Armoury, Airbursting fragmentation projector. Ignore the G in the weapon profile, add Barrage to type. Page 25 Airbursting Fragmentation Projector. Change the last sentence to: The weapon may not benefit from markerlight hits.
ERRATA
Page 26 Multi-tracker. Change the last sentence to: It enables the model to fire two weapons in the same turn. Page 29 Kroot Rifle. The last sentence should be changed to: Kroot with Kroot Rifles count as having two single-handed weapons in close combat. Page 31 Drones. Change the third sentence of the third paragraph to read: If the character with the drone controller is killed then all his drones are removed at the end of the phase in which he died. Page 37 Special rules, Fieldcraft. The third sentence should be deleted, as visibility through woods is now done with real line of sight. The Kroots bonuses to cover saves and movement in woods remain unchanged.
Page 26 Armoury, blacksun filter. Replace this entry with: A model equipped with a blacksun filter has the Night Vision special rule. Page 26 Armoury, bonding knife. Replace this entry with: A unit that contains one or more models equipped with bonding knives can always attempt to Regroup using its unmodified Leadership value. Page 26 Armoury, command and control node. This piece of wargear no longer has any effect. Page 26 Armoury, failsafe detonator. Change the second paragraph to read: The team is moved as normal, but the character stays where he is and the enemy may not make a Sweeping Advance. As soon as his team has moved the character activates the detonator place the Large Blast marker centred on the character. Every model hit takes a single Strength 8, AP hit, and the character is removed as a casualty. The enemy may not Consolidate. Note that the enemy unit need not take a Morale check should this attack inflict 25% casualties. Page 26 Battlesuit Armoury, Iridium Armour. Change the last sentence to read These increase the models Armour Save to 2+, but the additional 2D6" move in the Assault phase is reduced to 1D6". Page 27 Armoury, smart missile system. Change the explanatory text for this entry to read: The smart missile system can be fired at any target in range regardless of whether there is a line of sight to it or not. The target can count the benefits of cover they are in, or are touching if it lies between them and the firer. Page 27 Armoury, Smart Missile System. Ignore the final sentence (ref. Night Fight) completely. Page 27 Armoury, stealth field generator. Replace this entry with: A model with a stealth field generator has the Shrouded and Stealth special rules. Page 27 Armoury, stealth armour. Replace this entry with Stealth team members are Jetpack Infantry as are any drones attached to them. In addition they have the Acute Senses special rule. Page 27 Armoury, XV8 Crisis Battlesuit. Replace this entry with Crisis suits are Jetpack Infantry as are any drones attached to them. In addition they have the Acute Senses special rule. Page 28 Armoury, Target Lock. Replace this entry with A model with a target lock can shoot at a different target to the rest of his unit.
Page 28 Infantry Armoury, Bonding Knife. Replace this entry with A unit that contains one or more models equipped with bonding knives can always attempt to Regroup using its unmodified Leadership value. Page 29 Infantry Armoury, Markerlight. Ignore the third bullet-point (regarding target priority tests) altogether. Change the paragraph after the bullet-points to read: In any case, the use of a counter must always be declared before To Hit rolls are made by the firing unit, and the counter is only removed after rolls To Hit have been made. Page 30 Tau Vehicle Armoury, blacksun filter. Replace this entry with: A model equipped with a blacksun filter has the Night Vision special rule. Page 30 Tau Vehicle Armoury, decoy Launchers. Replace this entry with: Whenever an immobilised result is rolled on the Vehicle Damage table, the Tau player may force their opponent to re-roll the dice. Page 30 Armoury, Disruption Pod. Change the last sentence to read A vehicle with a disruption pod has the Shrouded special rule against any weapons firing from more than 12" away. Page 30 Gun Drones. At the end of the last sentence ignore and are treated as passengers if the vehicle is damaged. Page 30 Tau Vehicle Armoury, Gun Drones. Change the fifth sentence of the first paragraph to read: The drones may not rejoin the vehicle during the game and count as a denial unit for the purposes of capturing objectives. Page 31 Sensor Spines. Change to: Sensor spines are used to feed data to an advanced ground-following flight control system. A vehicle with this upgrade never takes dangerous terrain tests. Page 31 Tau Vehicle Armoury, Drones. Change the second paragraph to read Drones under the command of a drone controller are counted when assessing if the unit they are with should take a morale test due to having taken 25% casualties. They are similarly counted as part of their unit for the purposes of controlling and denying objectives. Page 31 Drones, Unit Type. Add the following at the end of the Drones section: Regardless of its Unit Type, a Drone counts as a single model for the purposes of Transport Capacity.

FAQs
Q. If a unit with advanced stabilization systems also has Marker Drones, can the drones remain stationary to fire their markerlights while the Battlesuits move using their advanced stabilization systems? (p25) A. Yes. Q: How are cover saves worked out for smart missile systems and seeker missiles as they do not need line of sight?(p27, 30) A: The target will only receive cover saves that are not based on line of sight. This would include when at least half the unit is in area terrain; or a vehicle with wargear or a special rule that means they are obscurred. Q. With the use of markerlights used to make a cover save worse, can the cover save be negated entirely, or is 6+ the worst it can get? Likewise, what is the lowest the Leadership of a unit can be decreased to for the purposes of pinning tests? (p29) A. In both cases, there is no maximum, so the cover save can be completely eliminated and the Ld can be lowered to the point when the unit fails the Pinning test automatically. Q: If a vehicle is reduced to Ballistic Skill 1 (because it is Shaken, Stunned, for example) do its seeker missiles fire at Ballistic Skill 1 or Ballistic Skill 5? (p29) A: Ballistic Skill 5. Q: Can a vehicle use a Markerlight generated by an Overwatch shot to fire a seeker missile? (p29) A: No. Q: If a Tau unit with networked markerlights fires Overwatch, may it use any markerlight counters generated to modify the BS of the Snap Shots? (p29) A: No. Q. If you have gun drones on a vehicle (i.e. not detached) and increase the BS of the vehicle using a markerlight, is the BS of the Gun Drones increased as well? (p30) A. No. Q. Can gun drones mounted on a vehicle still fire if the vehicle moved too fast, or isnt allowed to fire its weapons for any other reason? (p30) A. No, Gun Drones mounted on a vehicle may only fire if the vehicle is allowed to fire at least one weapon. If the vehicle is shaken or stunned, they can only fire Snap Shots. Q. Do all of a vehicles gun drones need to be destroyed before the vehicle gives up a victory point? (p30) A. Disengaged drones have no effect on this; this is based solely on the condition of the actual vehicle model.
Q: Are gun drones that have been detached from a vehicle able to contest objectives and do they give away a victory point if destroyed? (p30) A: Yes to both questions. Q: What happens to the gun drones on a vehicle if the vehicle is destroyed? (p30) A: The gun drones will be destroyed along with the vehicle. Note that they do not give away an additional victory point as they have not been detached from the vehicle. Q. What is the Leadership value for drones that have disengaged from a vehicle? (p31) A. They function as a Drone Squadron, which means they have a Leadership value of 7. Q. When Gun Drones disembark from a vehicle are they placed within 6" of an access point, from the recesses they were mounted in, or from somewhere entirely different? A. Anywhere wholly within 6" of the vehicle. (p31) Q: Can any kind of Tau Drones ever be considered characters? For example if attached to a character with a Drone Controller? (p31) A: No. Q: If a Tau character is involved in a challenge, can any Drones they have strike blows, have Wounds allocated to them, or offer Moral Support? (p31) A: No. Q: If Seeker Missiles are fired at a Zooming Flyer or Swooping Flying Monstrous Creature, what To Hit roll do they require? (p31) A: 6+ Q: If I wish to include an allied detachment from Codex: Tau Empire, do I still need to include 1+ Tau Commander and 1+ Fire Warrior Team? (p32/36) A: Yes. Q. Can you please clarify the rules for independent characters and Bodyguard/ Honour Guard for Tau characters, especially if they also select drones as part of their wargear. For example, do Tau characters with a retinue always count as independent characters for the purposes of close combat, or do they not? (p32-33) A. When selecting your army, if you buy a Tau character without a Bodyguard, he (and his drones) may join/leave units as a normal independent character. In combat, the character (and his drones) count as a separate unit.
If, when selecting your army, you buy a Bodyguard for a Tau character, the Bodyguard and the character (and his drones) must be fielded as a unit. In this case, the character (and his drones) cannot leave the Bodyguard unit. The character (and his drones) are members of the unit in all respects. Only if the entire Bodyguard is destroyed, the character returns to being an independent character, as described above. The same is true for Ethereals and their Honour Guard. Q: If an Ethereal (including Aunva) is killed, do models embarked in vehicles have to take a morale check? (p33) A: No. Q. If you buy more than one Team for the Tau Sniper entry, are they a single big unit or is each team independent of the other? (p40) A. They are a single Force Organisation chart selection, but they fight as three separate units. Q. The text says that the Spotter of a Sniper Drones squad is equipped with a drone controller. Does that mean he must buy 1 or 2 extra drones for his squad? Also, does that mean that if he is killed, the drones are removed, or do they continue to operate as a Drones squadron? (p40) A. The drone controller he is equipped with is used to control the Sniper Drones. This means that he cannot buy any extra drones and, if he is killed, the entire squad is removed. Q. Does an army including Commander OShova also need to include the mandatory Commander from the list (as they are 1+)? (p44) A. No, as OShova is a Commander himself, and so he fulfills that minimum requirement. Q. Can Commander Shadowsun join another unit as long as she has her drones with her? Can she have a Bodyguard? (p46) A. No and no. She is unique in the fact that she forms a separate unit with her three drones she is the same as an upgrade character for them and only if her three drones are destroyed does she become an independent character. Q. Shadowsun`s Command-Link Drone special rule says: any Tau units within 18" may use her Leadership for any Morale, Pinning or Target Priority tests. Is this within 18" of the drone or Shadowsun herself? (p46) A. 18" of the drone. Q: Can Broadside Battlesuits fire submunition shots? (reference ssection, Warhammer 40,000 rulebook) A: No.
