PART A - Organization Information (1) Gender Inequality Bake Sale (2) Moving Towards Inequality (3) Cheyenne Chui, Lisa Moua, Christine Long, Jessica Taylor, Samantha Turner (4) http://movingtowardsequality.weebly.com/ and moving.towards.equality@gmail.com (5) As a coalition, our mission is to understand the various facets regarding our topic of gender roles, discrimination, and violence within society, and use such information to educate others, spread awareness, and take action in order to diminish. We hope one day eliminate aspects that affect our society so deeply. With determination, and passion, we strive to make the difference, to join the others already on the move, in order to change society for the better. PART B - Description of the Problem and Theory of Change In 750 words or less, describe contemp. issue and specific problem organization aims to address. Articulate causes, impact and persistence of problem: America is a country where many things falls into place and establishes dimensions and levels of empowerment. However, as a country of freedom and equality there have been many situations when it proves that statement wrong. In addition, many countries are still fighting for more than just equality and freedom in their countries. Taking the course Experimental Offering in Interdisciplinary Studies here at Sacramento State University, we are here to create projects to create social changes and lives improvement for all awareness. As our class have divided into group to focus on what change we desired to make a difference in, we, Hiu Yi Chui (Cheyenne), Christine Nguyen Long, Lisa Moua, Jessica Aitien Taylor, and Samantha Turner, as a coalition have chosen to research gender inequality. Here in the United States we are used to seeing the world as a patriarchal society, many of us are automatically led to the false conclusion that men are better than women. We see this as a major social problem and we believe there should be a significant amount of people to acknowledge that male and female are equal. However, we do not encourage violent riots, but do desire to have people recognize that there is indeed a problem and how our thought process can affect how people are viewed. As of today, many women are still thought of as property. In much of the Middle East, women are forbidden to acquire higher education. In Asia, specifically China and India, the one-child policy has been the catalyst that leads to female infanticide and gender inequality ratios. It is because people do not realize that problems like these are rooted within the human psyche, desire over one another and stereotyping. Our coalition believes it can be changed if we are able to think differently. Many of us are oblivious to how unequal women are treated still, and that it is even happening within the United States. Many issues that concern gender inequality are normally not covered, or are simply glossed over by the media, often, not even identifying the issue as that of gender inequality. In todays world, especially with todays youth, a main source of information comes from what they learn off the more popular sources of media, social or otherwise, therefore making this a rather large issue in our coalitions opinion. This is why it is our hope that to close the gender gap and to change the notion of what is considered to be gender equal, one thing, more than any other occurs: awareness. Many people in the United States today do not realize that women, on average, are paid seventy-seven cents to a mans dollar, and single
mothers are paid even less, in terms of ratio. Many people do not acknowledge the fact that there are points in which there are different gender standards and therefore, gender inequality, such as when a man has many relationships or sexual partners in comparison to a woman; he is labeled a player or stud by society, whereas the woman is labeled a whore or slut for doing the same. This finds its root within the concept of the gender gap and gender inequality. For the most part, men and women are ignorant to the fact that, as a whole, they play into the idea of the unequal treatment of genders, either by continuing to promote the concepts in play, or simply going along with it. However, for the most part, many do not realize what they are doing; they are ignorant, and that in itself is a wrong. It is what leads to gender roles, gender expectations, and the violence and opinion of said violence born from it all. That is why it is important to bring awareness, indicate what is wrong, what is to be changed and so forth. Discuss what needs to be done to address problem: We need to be able to understand that society, in its own way, is ignorant. Many things can be done to address this problem. However, the most efficient is by tabling and giving out information. In order to give people an idea of how unfair and wrong inequality is, we are planning to make inequality come to life with a gender inequality bake sale. We want the campus community to see and feel how discrimination works. We are using the bake sale to not only raise funds to donate to an organization, but we also plan to hand out flyers with information about the inequality difference between men and women. Also, by creating the bake sale event, we are using it as a peaceful demonstration to gain the attention of the Sac State community. Also, we plan on handing out surveys in order to gather information about how accepting and aware the campus community really is, in dealing with the gender issue. Incorporate strategies and/or ideas from at least two models of success (similar or related projects that have positively impacted the contemporary issue your organization endeavours to address) Cite pertinent work (project, research, publications, etc.) that shapes groups views. http://www.rapidgrowthmedia.com/dogood/02022012EqualityBakeSale.aspx 1). This link provides us with a better picture of how our bake sale would work. The article discusses how the Jane Hibbard Idema Womens Resource Center at Aquinas College hosts their basical. It began small and now, it is considered an annual event hosted by the resource center at their college. Their proceeds all go to the resource center in which it funds the research to study the effects and casualties of gender inequality. According to the center, they usually host their bake sale in accordance to Valentines Day. Essentially this college in Michigan has the same concept of using the wage difference of 77 cents to each $1 that men are getting paid to spread awareness at their bake sale. We plan to follow this model of varying the price change in accordance to allow the public to truly discover that women are not being treated equally even though it may seem as if we, as women, have been treated with the equal pay/respect we rightfully deserve as equal human beings. 2). Another model of success that wed look upon is the student sponsored equality bake sale that students at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln campus, hosted in their own university union. Its goal was to spread awareness. It was not exactly trying to find a solution, more of the bake sale was a strong realization to the community that inequality still exists. The whole point was, yeah, its not fair that men would pay more for a cupcake, Audrey Nance, SAGE treasurer said. And its not fair that women get
paid less than men. Its not supposed to be fair. Its supposed to open your eyes to how unfair it is. With their bake sale they also captured the interest of an off campus resource. Their bake sale was such a huge hit that the local newspaper published an article about the work they have accomplished and the questions that they are raising with their bake sale. Our coalition would like to do the same thing. We want to capture the communitys interest, to spread awareness through media publicity, and as well as do something for a community that has allowed us to grow. By making our event an LI (Leadership Initiative) event, we plan to publicize to the community and hopefully be an example for others in their strive to become leaders of today and tomorrow. PART C - Community Partners Enlist support and guidance of community organization or individual that does relevant work on issue (i.e. campus organization or centre, community non-professional organization, public agency, etc.). For our project we plan to enlist the guidance and support of the Multicultural Center and the Womens Resource Center available to us at Sacramento State. Describe nature of partnership: With what organization or individual your coalition work and how to work together? The Multicultural Center has hosted many events throughout the month of March in order to spread awareness of feminism and the social inequality that is still happening throughout all parts of the world today. We are focusing more on gender inequality than any other type of inequality so we have enlisted the help of the Womens Resource Center in order for us to gain even more information about what is going on with womens issues in todays society. We realize that women in different cultures are treated differently which is a reason why we want to partner with the Multicultural Center. We would consider tabling with the Multicultural Center and Womens Resource Center. Tabling works where we would be selling the cupcakes on one side/table and the other side/table there would be information in the form of flyers, pamphlets, and possibly even keychains/bracelets with information on inequality. The keychains, people would have to donate at least a certain amount towards My Sisters House in order for them to acquire the keychains. PART D - Project Synthesis Three types project eligible for funding: (1) Service (2) Education (3) Policy Service Projects aim directly fill a need in community or among target pop. Education project focus on research problem and/or increasing publics awareness problem. As a group, we hope to achieve a greater awareness of gender roles, violence and societys current understanding/view of equality. Key events include the presentation and active participation in the our service project. We have chosen to partake in a Bake Sale to raise awareness in the fact that to every mans dollar, a woman is paid approximately 77 cents. Not only is this project to raise awareness about inequality in the workforce, but it is to also raise funds for donation to My Sisters House, in appreciation for their help and support in our Coalitions focus in Gender Roles, Discrimination and Violence in society.
The project is planned to take place on the 8th and 9th of April, from 10 to 5PM on both days. Due to schedule overlapping and prior engagements, not all group members will be able to watch the booth for the length of time the booth is open. However, we have discussed and have formulated a schedule for which each member is planned to man the station. We have planned to have 2 to 3 members at the booth at all times to allow for smoother operating for the booth (ideally, one person to operate the sale of the baked goods, another to operate the sales/profit and a third to keep an eye on the surveys being distributed to and received back from the participants). During the time we are open, we have planned to give each of the participants a survey to take, which will ask them various questions on gender roles and their opinions on the effect gender has on various aspects of society, such as in the workforce, in the federal system, normal day-to-day life, etc. Through these surveys we intend to gather statistical information on a school-wide scale to present on our poster for a better understanding of the positions a close community has on such a wide topic. Our goal for this project is to obtain enough profit to donate to My Sisters House, along with gather enough statistical data so we may apply it to our presentation and project as a whole. We are conducting both a service and educational project so we may be able to target a specific audience (Sacramento States student population), research further into our Coalitions focus (through our use of surveys) and ultimately raise awareness of Gender Roles, Violence and Discrimination in society. We first planned the event through a post on a social media site. The post was of another Equality Bake Sale and applied the same initial connection to raise awareness about the workforce: women make approximately 77 cents to the mans dollar. Through this initial spark of information, we began formulating what, specifically our group wanted to add and/or take away from the original posting. While we kept the idea of Women earn 77 cents to the mans dollar, we decided to go further, and require a survey be taken along with the purchase of a baked good to further aid us in our endeavours to raise awareness of Gender Inequality. Once all this was planned, the finalization of most of the minor details were settled, and an application for funding was written, edited and posted to the Coalition website for further processing.
