There are many flaws in the public school system today that make educating American children a difficult task. Some of the challenges that our educational system faces are parent involvement, and the value of education and being in control of your learning. All of these challenges can be traced back to where you come from and the opertunieties available for you. Nobody can control what you choose to do with your education all in all, but many times parents play a huge factor in what you choose to do with it. Children coming from less affluent homes tend to lessen the value of education because of not having seen their parents benefiting from the system creating a vicious cycle. In more affluent areas well educated parents pass on a respect for books, a grasp of basic arithmetic, and a mastery of the finer points of the English language (Kids are the Focus of Reform Tucker, Cynthia 6) creating a home environment that values education. At a young age parents have the decision to get their kids to school, to make them do homework, and to instill, from a young age, the desire to attain an education. As a student, you sometimes tend to struggle to see the importance of coming to school. Long school days, boring and tedious material makes students feel as if its just not worth it. In the poem Did I Miss Anything? by Tom Wayman, the title represents the mentality of students asking if they missed anything beneficial to their lives or just material
that the Public School system is requiring them to memorize. Our educational system is not assembled for you to query and examine and ponder (Did I Miss Anything? Wayman, Tom 27) but for students to memorize material based on what others think you need to know. This constraint for education lessens the importance because students have less of a say in what they want to explore with their education. There are many opportunities for our Public School system but would require the system to make reforms. Creating an environment with the parents where students are not influenced by their parents decisions would be very difficult but attainable. This goal could be attainable through parent teacher meetings or after school programs or extra time and focus from teachers with students coming from these backgrounds. Students should also be able to craft and shape the ways they want their education and not be restricted by the guidelines set by others. All of these reforms are attainable but without the heroic ideas about what would solve them, if those ideas dont demonstrably do that (Schoolwork Lemann, Nicholas 9).
