Wasps defeat Guilford 44-7 to clinch share Upcoming of ODAC Regular Season Championship
Events
The Emory & Henry Wasps proved that they know how to finish a football season, beating Guilford 44-7 on Nov. 15 and tying for first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The day started out cold and wet, but that would be the only trouble the Wasps faced all day. The Wasps started strong with a Joey Daniels interception. The following 5-play drive resulted in a touchdown by Caleb Jennings from two yards out, putting the score at 7-0 with 11:43 to go in the first quarter. The next drive for Guilford resulted in a punt, which Jennings returned 63 yards for another Emory & Henry touchdown, tacking another seven points on the board. Their next possession with the ball would result in a missed field goal from the 33yard line by Luke Hawk. However, this was in no way a loss of momentum for the team as Daniels intercepted another pass, this time returning it for 25 yards. A penalty brought the ball back 10 yards, but it only took 3 plays for Brent McDonald to find Jennings with a 19-yard pass for another touchdown, placing the score at 21-0. With 2:10 left in the first quarter, McDonald threw an interception to Guilfords Kenneth Hyman. Guilfords drive moved into the second quarter but nothing materialized, resulting in another punt to the Wasps. The quarter was slow for both teams, with only Emory coming away with a touchdown on a 19-yard McDonald pass to Jonathan Hawkins with 39 seconds left in the quarter. The score at halftime was 28-0 in favor of the Wasps. Only 15 seconds into the third quarter, Jennings scored again with a 32-yard run. The next Guilford drive, Ed Smith forced a Guilford fumble, which was recovered by B.T. Roberts. The resulting drive stalled, and resulted in a punt to Guilford. With eight minutes left in the third, Hawk missed his second field goal of the game, this one from 34 yards away. The following Emory drive would allow Hawk redemption, as Hawk tack on another 3-points with a field goal from 32 yards out, making the score 38-0. The fourth quarter started off with another Wasps' touchdown off of a 15-yard McDonald pass to Corey Shepherd. However, the extra point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 44-0.

Senior wideout Johnathan Hawkins goes up for a touchdown catch in the win over Guilford.

With just over three minutes left in the game, Guilford got on the board with a 3-yard run by Mike Six. No other progress was made, ending the game at 44-7. The Wasps recorded 204 rushing yards and 128 yards passing, which resulted in 332 offensive yards. Hawkins had one touchdown and 74 yards receiving, followed by Shepherd who had one touchdown and 15 yards receiving. McDonald completed 10 out of 21 passes for 128 yards and 3 touchdown passes with only 1 interception. Jennings had 136 yards rushing with 2 touch-

downs. He had 19 yards receiving and another touchdown. For the third week in a row, Jennings finished with more than 300 all-purpose yards (316). He finished the season with 1,157 rushing yards and 2,161 all-purpose yards. His 2,161 all-purpose yards is an ODAC single-season record and the third highest in Virginias state Division III record book. The win put Emory & Henry into a four-way tie with Catholic, Hampden-Sydney and RandolphMacon, and guaranteed them a share of the Conference Title.

Sports Opinion
By Chris Hatcher

Recently, several Emory & Henry players have been honored by the ODAC Conference in their respective sports. Football Joey Daniels won his second award from the ODAC Conference in the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week Award for his performance in the Wasps 44-7 victory over Guilford. Daniels was key in the win, intercepting two passes, making three tackles, and deflecting a pass. Caleb Jennings was honored as the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week after his 316 all-purpose yards in the Wasps 44-7 defeat of Guilford. Jennings 2,161 all-purpose yards, is a new

Conference record. Volleyball Rachel Fertitta was named both the ODAC Rookie of the Year in volleyball, but also named to the first team All-ODAC volleyball team. Fertitta led the conference in several different statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.347), kills per game (3.79) and blocks per game (1.10). Soccer Chris OConnor was honored by the ODAC for his stellar play in two ways. Chris was named to both the Honorable Mention AllODAC and All-Sportsmanship teams. Chris teammate PJ Henson also was honored by the conference, being named to the Second team All-ODAC.

The past two years I have run a column entitled Sports Arrests: Five Social Deviants also known as Athletes. Because of the frequency of arrests in the sports world and the high-profile nature of some of these arrests, I am compelled to run the third installment in the series. Continued from the Nov. 12 issue of The Whitetopper, here is Top Five Social Deviants Also Known as Athletes, part 2. 3.Brandon Marshall: Marshall is perhaps the most consistent playmaker on this list, but that doesnt give him a pass on being a functional member of society. In case you were wondering, Marshall is not. In 2004 while in college, Marshall was arrested on Halloween for assault on a law enforcement officer, refusal to obey, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. On March 26, 2007, Marshall was arrested on the suspicion of domestic violence against his girlfriend. On June 12, 2008, Marshall was ticketed for an illegal lane change, then found to be without his license and proof of insurance. In the early morning of Oct. 22, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Denver area for driving under the influence of alcohol. Georgia filed misdemeanor battery charges on Sept. 10 for an alleged incident on March 4, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia. On March 22, 2008, Marshall slipped on an empty McDonalds bag while wrestling with family members, and subsequently fell through a television set at his home in Orlando, Florida -- cutting his right forearm. He was treated at a local hospital and later released after needing a cast and several stitches. He was suspended by the league for 3 games and fined, but successfully appealed the decision and only served a one game suspension. Marshall also attempted a statement celebration supporting Barack Obamas election after catching the game-winning touchdown pass against the Browns on Nov. 6. Teammate Brandon Stokely stopped the celebration, sparing Marshall another possible fine/suspension and the team a 15-yard penalty. 4.Adam Pacman J o n e s : Another season, another trouble making opportunity for Adam Pacman Jones. Out of all the characters on this list, he has the dubious honor of having the most impressive (albeit embarrassing) rap sheet. Hell, he nearly rivals the entire Bengals roster when it comes to that department. Though he has not been arrested recently, that hasnt dropped him off my radar, or out of the headlines. Earlier this year Pacman (who has now asked that people stop using his ridiculous nickname) was involved in an altercation at a hotel with a member of his own security staff. Jerry Jones was perplexed about how that could happen, but this is the same entourage that shot and paralyzed a man outside of a Vegas strip club, and this is Pacman Jones. No arrests were made, although the police were called. This incident drew a somewhat lengthy suspension from the league, which I support. Roger Goodell said no monkey business, and he showed he means it. And although in the grand scheme of things a talk with police isnt the worst thing an athlete can do, it still shows that Adam Pacman Jones hasnt changed his stripes, and is unlikely to. He displays a continual carelessness about his actions and how they affect others. Adam Jones is by definition a Social Deviant. Be sure to check next weeks issue to see the third and final part of the list.
