Echo Sounder

The document provides onboard practices and potential errors for using an echosounder. It lists daily checks, maintaining spare paper and manuals, marking depth readings on charts, and pressing buttons to mark locations. Potential errors include issues with stylus speed, variations in water temperature and salinity affecting wave propagation, multiple echoes between the bottom and sea bed, incorrect zero line adjustment, spacing between transducers, and thermal layers appearing between the surface and actual depth due to salinity and temperature differences. Maintenance should follow the bridge PMS and be logged.

Echosounder

Onboard Practices- Echo-sounder

a) Daily Checks of Echo-sounder.
b) Check for the spare paper.
c) The Manual of Equipments is to be readily available.
d) Test and Sign The Echo sounder graph When Departure Checks are carried out.
e) Compare the contour lines in the Chart with depth measured by the Echo-sounder.
If any major difference inform Master.
f) Press the Mark button While crossing the longitude, It is easy to study the graph along with the
Charted depth especially in River/Canal navigation.
g) Aeration causes during reverse propulsion and It hampers the performance of the Ecosounder.(If The
situation permit, may be switched off for the duration of Stern Propulsion Only, However no rule
permit you from the responsibilities.)
h) Maintenance as per Bridge PMS. And entry to be made in the register.

Error Associated With Echo-Sounder.

1. Stylus Speed Error.
This is occurred due to the changes in the speed of the Stylus.
2. Velocity of Propagation Error
The velocity of Acoustic waves vary according to temperature, Pressure, or Salinity Changes.
The Salinity and Temperature have a large effect on the Acoustic Waves.
3. Multiple echoes
It is occurred because the Acoustic waves travels a number of times between the bottom of the ship
and Sea bed. Phasing Facility must be used to eliminate multiple echoes, Eco Sounder must be
started at lowest scale.
4. Zero Line Adjustment Error
The Zero Line indicator must be correct to get the correct depth.
5. Pythagoras Error
This error is coursed when two transducer is fitted, The cause of error is related to Spacing between
the Transmitting Transducer and Receiving Transducer.
6. Thermal and density Layers.
The Faint Layer caused due to the return of the waves in each Ocean Layers. These Layers are
formed due to the Different Salinity and temperature. It Appears on the Graph between Zero and
Actual Depth.
