SJES 2235 ASSIGNMENT

QUESTION 28.25 :

FIND TWO LINEAR INDEPENDENT SOLUTIONS TO THE GIVEN DIFFENRENTIAL EQUATIONS :

2x²y’’- xy’ + (1-x)y = 0

x²y’’- 0.5xy’ + 0.5(1-x)y = 0

Compare the equation with

x²y’’+xP(x)y’+ Q(x)y = 0

Then we have,

P(x) = -0.5 , Q(x) = 0.5(1-x)

Since both P(x) and Q(x) are analytic, x=0 is a regular singular point.

r(r-1) + P0r + Q0 = 0

r(r-1) + 0.5r + 0.5 = 0

2r2-2r-r+1=0

2r2-3r+1=0

(2r-1)(r-1)=0

r1 = 1, r2 = 0.5 r1>r2

r1 - r2 =0.5 (is not integer)

Let,

y = ∑ an x r + n
n =0

y' ' = ∑ (r + n)an x r + n−1
n =0

y' ' = ∑ (r + n − 1)(r + n)an x r + n− 2
n =0

Substitute into equation 2x²y’’- xy’ + (1-x)y = 0,

let k=n+1, n=k-1

Recurrence relation: a k = k = 1,2,3....
2(r + k − 1)(r + k ) − (r + k ) + 1

Then implies that,
