under
for nine instruments and electronics
duration: 14:30 min
dedicated to my sister Ute
first performance: Electronic Musik Week Shanghai, October 22, 2013
Under depicts the unseen forces below the surface of a living organism: the surface of the earth, the skin of a human or the apparently quiet mirror of a lake at night.

instrumentation:
2 violins
1 viola
1 violoncello
1 C-flute, doubling piccolo
1 Bb-clarinet, doubling bass clarinet
1 oboe
1 piano
1 percussionist

electronics
The electronics are realized as a Max/MSP stand-alone application for Macintosh. No Max/MSP authorization is
necessary on the computer. The application contains all soundfiles.
During rehearsals and concerts, the computer will be operated by the pianist. The score and the piano part
indicate EVENT numbers, which correspond to the moment, when the pianist presses the SPACE-bar on the
computer. This action will trigger soundfiles. During rehearsals, the pianist will be able to set the electronics to a
particular EVENT in order to start the rehearsal from there.
The built-in sound output (mini-jack) of the computer will be connected to two powered loudspeakers, each of
them in front of the piano and percussion respectively.
The sound-level should be set to obtain a blending mix between the ensemble and the soundfiles.

technical requirements
two loudspeakers on the floor (like stage monitors), either self-powered or with amplifiers, one in front of the
piano, one in front of the percussion set
one laptop Macintosh PowerBook (placed on a stand next to the pianist)
cables between the sound output of the PowerBook to the loudspeakers
