The Soloist

Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx

Directed by Joe Wright

By Xoxi Munoz
October 17, 2014

Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Handel, Debussy and
Chopin. We are given a sliver of what these great composers fabricated
in the musical biography The Soloist. This motion picture propagates
divinity and grace through its music. As the movie illustrated the tense
realities and perspective of the homeless and schizophrenic through the
music flowed within creating our stomachs to rise within us.
The Soloist is based upon The Soloist: A lost dream, an unlikely
friendship and the redemptive power of music by Steve Lopez the book
describes the relationship between Lopez, a Los Angeles Times
columnist, and Nathaniel Ayers. Their relationship is a complicated one.
Filled with fear, praise and love. Lopez received many great reviews
from his first novel. "An intimate portrait of mental illness, of atrocious
social neglect, and the struggle to resurrect a fallen prodigy." ... Google
Books.
At first Nathaniel is a mystery. Steve Lopez discovers him while
Nathaniel is playing the violin immaculately with only two strings. It
becomes Steves mission to write in his column about him and expose
his talent. Stereotypes are broken through this movie. Not all of the
homeless are runways or drunks. Nathaniel was a musical prodigy who
went to the top musical school in the world, Juilliard. What caused him
to become homeless was his mental illness of schizophrenia. During his
third year at Juilliard it became too difficult for him to function and he
had a psychotic break. Schizophrenia affects 1.1% of the United States
population above the age of 18.
Nathaniel seemed to be a different kind of homeless man. He held
no cardboard sign pleading for food or pennies. He simply played his
violin with his heart and soul and was covered head to toe in clothing
filled with the great composers and musicians of all time.
The Soloist is a movie that will keep you on your toes waiting for
the next unexpectable scene. Steve Lopezs amazing work has inspired
us all through Nathaniel's heart breaking story. Nathaniel is simply a
lover with a gift of melody. May the inspiration and vibes from the old
greats of music and new fill you while you watch this gracious film.
