Homework 1
Due Friday, 17/1/2014

1. The liquid phase reaction 2A B + C is taking place isothermally, with
no change of volume in a plug flow reactor. The feed to the reactor consists of
55% (per volume) of A in an inert liquid. The total volume flowrate is 150 L/min.
The rate of the reaction is given by: -rA=kC
2
/(k1+CB) with a reaction rate constant
k=0.01 s
-1
and k1=5 L/mol. The molecular weight of A is 32 g/mol and its density
at the reactor operating temperature is 0.9 g/cc.
a. Derive an equation that relates the concentration of A at the reactor exit as 20
function of the volume of the reactor.
b. Determine the volume of the reactor needed to convert 75% of A into B
18

and C.
c. If the reactor is to be a 4-inch ID pipe, plot the concentration of B at the
20

exit of the reactor as function of the length of the reactor tube. What
important observations can you make concerning the rate of the reaction
and the conversion of A to B as function of the reactor length (or volume)?

2. The isomerization reaction A B will be carried out at constant temperature
in two reactors, a CSTR and a PFR. Calculate the reactor volumes necessary to
convert 95% of A when the entering molar flowrate is 10 mol/hr and the entering
volume flowrate is 5 L/hr. The reaction rate may be given by either a or b below:
a. rA = k (k=6x10
-6
mol/L s)
12

b. rA = kCA (k=0.006 min
-1
) 12
Calculate the time necessary to consume 99% of chemical species A in a V=2,000
L constant volume batch reactor when the initial concentration of A in the reactor
is 0.8 mol/L and the reaction rate is given by:
c. Same as a. above.
6
d. Same as b. above. 6
e. How long will it take to convert 99% of A if the reactor volume is 6
increased to V=4,000 L (for either reaction rate relation)?
