What happened?
The SS Andrea Doria and MV Stockholm were two
naval vessels which collided with one another at
sea. The SS Andrea Doria was an Italian Cruise
liner ship headed towards New York, and MV
Stockholm was a Swedish-American Ship headed
towards Europe. The incident happened near
Nantucket Massachusetts on July 25th, 1956. It was
a day that would change the engineering world
indefinitely.
Why it happened?
It is believed that the collision occurred because both ships failed to
communicate via radio to know each others exact location. They relied on
their radars instead, but never really knew each others exact location. To
avoid a collision Stockholm turned about twenty degrees to allow enough
room for the Andrea Doria to pass by. Little did they know they were now
closer than ever and did not notice the other ship until it was to late to
change directions. After the crash they contacted each other to find out
who the other ship was, and called for assistance.

Impact
Became one of the top ten incidents where most people were
saved
Captain and crew members of ship are well trained and
prepared for these types of events
Simulations are created to deal with this and other types of
accidents out at sea
Radars improved greatly with brighter and clearer screens
