wanted no part of being 0-2
to start the season.
Sure, the Cadillac boys
basketball team is still trying to fit the pieces together
but not winning a game in
the first week wasnt going
to happen on his watch.
Brooks stepped it up
down the stretch, including
having the game-winning
bucket as the Vikings rallied to beat McBain 50-47 in
a non-conference contest
Thursday night.
The senior forward attacked the basket from the
baseline, drawing the hoopand-the-harm for a threepoint play to put Cadillac
up 48-47 with 40.1 seconds
remaining.
McBain got a look at the
other end but Cadillac got
the rebound.
After a pair of missed free
throws with 20.1 seconds
remaining, the Ramblers got
off another shot but committed an offensive foul on
the rebound.
Cadillacs Andrew Emington hit both of the ensuing
free throws for a 50-47 lead
with 5.9 seconds remaining.
McBain got a good look at
the end to tie the game but
the shot came up short.
Brooks was relieved to
get the first win under their
belts.
It felt like when the game
came down to it, as a senior
I wanted to take care of
things, he said. I wanted
to make sure we won.
I was kind of ticked at
that point and didnt want
to see it happen again after
Tuesdays game.
These early games are
big for a Cadillac team that
is still finding where the
pieces fit together after losing key players from a team
that advanced to the Class B
state semifinals last year.
Add in a long run in football through the middle of
November and its a work in
progress.
Thursdays win was another step in that direction.
I think were still feeling
our way as a team, Cadillac
coach Jeff McDonald said.
Were still a bit behind
where we feel we should be
as a team and some of that is
because of a lack of playing
time (together) in the fall.
Were not ready to be
a good team yet but that
doesnt mean were not going to be one. Thats our
goal.

his team didnt win the
game but hell take a lot of
positives out of playing a
team like Cadillac tough.
I am going to take so
many positives out of this
game because of our youth,
he said. Our big guys grew
up a lot tonight and so did
our young guards.
The kids know what they
have to do to get better. We
responded well in the second half especially to what
they were doing and we
grew up.
Cadillac led 9-7 after the
first quarter and 23-20 at
halftime in what was another low-scoring slugfest
between the two teams.
McBain came out the hotter team in the third quarter
and built a 30-23 lead on a
layup by Grant Gugle and a
3-pointer by Triston Wilson
to cap a 10-0 run.
Brooks answered with a

three-point play of his own
and Cadillac took the lead
back at 31-30 on a free throw
by Lewis Finch. McBain led
34-33 after three quarters.
I thought all night long it
was a game of little runs,
Koopman said. We could
have had the lead at the half
except for a couple of turnovers and there were times
down the stretch when we
couldve done some things
differently.
The Vikings were up 45-42
with 2:19 remaining before
McBain sophomore Cole
Powell answered with five
straight points on a jumper
and a 3-pointer for a 47-45
lead with 1:30 to go.
Thats when Brooks took
over.
Down the stretch, Jalen
did what you expect a kid of
his experience and stature
to do. He took it over, McDonald said. This is two

games in a row for us where
we showed a lot of poise
when we were behind.
Brooks paced Cadillac
with 20 points while Justin
Liptak had 10 and Finch
added seven.
Powell paced McBain with
21 points and Hunter Kitson
had nine.
Cadillac won the JV
game 42-36. Ethan Baker led
the Vikings with 15 points
while Tyler Barczewski
had 10 and Storm Waterson
eight.
Logan Eling paced
McBain with 14 points and
Craig Sterk scored 12.
Cadillac won the freshman game 50-12. Gavin
Daniels paced the Vikings
with 13 points while Tommy
Huckle had nine and Shawn
Praay eight.
TRAVERSE CITY Pine

River got balanced scoring,
solid rebounding, shot an
improved percentage over
its opener, and limited a
tough player through three
quarters in beating a nonconference opponent.
So Bucks' head coach
Brian Goodenow must have
been pleased as punch, right?
"We turned it over more
than I would've liked," the
second-year coach admitted.
Kidding aside, Goodenow
saw a lot to be happy about
as his team rolled to a 76-52
road win over Traverse City
Christian Thursday night in
boys' basketball action.
"I was very happy that offensively in the first quarter
we came out and knocked
down some shots," he said,
something the Bucks struggled with against Harrison
earlier in the week.
Pine River hit just 33 percent from the field against
the Hornets, including just 19
percent from beyond the arc.
Against the Sabres, the
Bucks shot 44 percent from
the field, and a torrid 46 percent from downtown.
About the only thing the
visitors struggled with
was TC Christian senior
big man Kris Crosby, who
scored 11 points in the opening quarter as Pine River
led just 23-22 after eight
minutes of play.
But the Bucks, using a
combination of fronting

Sieting and even using
guards Skylar Nelson and
Mitch McDonald on occasion, held the 6-feet-8 center
to just 12 points through the
final three stanzas.
"Once we figured out a
way to slow down their
big guy, the defense did its
job," Goodenow said. "We
rebounded well tonight, and
didn't give them many second chances."
Meanwhile, the Bucks got
double-digit scoring out of
four players, led by Nelson's
17 points.
Pine River led 44-31 at the
half and 58-40 heading into
the final quarter.
McDonald added 16 points
and seven steals, Lucas
Harris had 13 points and
grabbed seven rebounds,
and Brandon Hoaglund recorded 11 points, six boards
and six assists.
