Quilting in Math!
A quilt is usually made in square sections called blocks. We will be making individual quilt pieces
so that we can make a class quilt we can hang up.

You will hand in your quilt piece, rough draft, communication page and this
piece of paper with the rubric on the back on Tuesday February 17th
Your Task: You will be in charge of creating a quilt piece that utilizes various angles, triangles
and quadrilaterals.

Part One: Design your quilt block

-

Your pattern should include only triangles and quadrilaterals: each type of triangle must be
present (right, isosceles, scalene, equilateral)
Use a sheet of lined paper to practice your design. You will need Ms. Smiths signature on
your design in order to get your good paper to begin your quilt block.

Part Two: Good copy

-

To reproduce your pattern on a large piece of paper

Use a ruler and a protractor to draw the shapes you used on your early design
Each type of triangle/shape must be in a different color. Ex) right triangles might be in blue
and scalene may be green, quadrilaterals in red etc.

Part Three: Communication

-

You will need a legend describing what the colors mean on your design
You will need to pick one of each type of the triangles and one quadrilateral and describe
the angles in the shape (use letters to label the angles)
Measure all the angles and identify the type of each angle
Ex) Angle BCE = 72 and therefore it is an acute angle
Show that the sum of all angles in your triangles is 180 degrees
Show that the sum of all angles in you quadrilateral is 360 degrees
