Book Report

Divergent
is an exciting fantasy novel by the best-selling author Veronica Roth. The
book
Divergent
was published in 2011 by the Harper Collins Publishers. It has 478 pages and
is a novel/science fiction book. I choose to do my report on this book because I love this book
and think it is the best. In my report, I will be giving you a summary of the book, a brief
description of the setting and my opinion of the book.
The book, Divergent, starts in the Priors house. The main character Beatrice Prior, age
16, is in the Abnegation faction. The time has come to choose what faction she will live the
rest of her life. In the annual ceremony, people from all the different factions(all 16 years old
of age) come together and choose what faction they will become. Oh the pressure! For most
teenagers it is an easy decision to stay in their faction, their love, but for people who leave
the faction, they came from will always be hated by their families an empty space that cant
be replaced, someone you will never forget and someone you will probably never see again
unless you visit them on Visiting day. Beatris is in the faction of Abnegation, or the faction
that only wants to be selfless for the sake of others. They are the people who always wear
gray, always are polite and always are respectful. These are the people who will even die for

you if they have to. But Beatrice does not think so. She thinks that she is too selfish, too
rowdy, too disrespectful to be in the Abnegation faction. So she makes a life changing
decision, and chooses Dauntless, the faction of the brave. In Dauntless, she is hit hard with
the truth. Instead of the old ways where the Dauntless are always loyal and fight well, she
finds out that the old ways have changed, all because of a gory and belligerent Dauntless
leader named Eric. Tris(she changed her name), now that she moved into a new faction, had
exams to pass, or else she would end up factionless, like homeless people, or worse.
Factionless were people who failed and were factionless because they didnt pass the exams
or test. The first test that Tris had to pass was the physical test. You were ranked in order
from the best fighters to the worst fighters. The last two people who were ranked last were
cut off and turned into factionless. Tris is not a very good fighter because she has a small
body figure, but is ranked 6th out of 9th because she beat Molly one of her tormentors along
with Peter and Drew. One day, Tris and her new friends Christina, Will, and Albert all decide
to get tattoos. One of Triss other counselors, Four, tells her she looks good. She is very
light-hearted the rest of the night and eventually falls in love with him. It was now time for
the second exam. The trainers tell the initiates that this second exam nobody can prepare
for. Tris enters the simulation room and sits down on the metal chair while Four explains
what the second exam is. In this exam, the computer learns the initiates fears and analyzes
the information and makes it feel like it is real and that they are experiencing. The only way
to pass the level was to keep calm and steady your breathing. The thing was most initiates
thought it was real, except a certain type of people, the divergent. When the results came out
Tris was first with 3 minutes. The second person Peter, also one of Triss enemy, has a the
time of 8 minutes. He threatens Tris and storms away after Will protects her. But. never
underestimate Peter. Soon after, Tris is almost kidnapped by Peter, Drew, and Al and is
dangled over a chasm, while four boys repeatedly curse and hit her. Luckily, Four comes to
the rescue and saves her. While her wounds heal and her relationship with Four grows, she
also figures out Erics evil plan about getting control over the Abnegation, Triss old faction.
The plan of what they are trying to do is brainwashing all the Dauntless warriors to kill the
Abnegation. With help with the Erudite who are always hungry and greedy for power and
knowledge they develop a serum and inject everyone. Though they did not know at that
time, Tris as Divergent, which meant that even though you injected her with the serum, it
would not control her because her genes were different. After fighting, making compromises,

and both her parents sacrificing their life so Tris could live. She overcomes her grief and wins
in the end.
The setting in Divergent takes place in a newer version of Chicago. The new Chicago is
made up of five factions. Abnegation is the faction for the selfless. The people of Abnegation
wear simple gray clothes and bow heads in respect. The Abnegation faction provides the
citys leaders because they are not thirst for power. Dauntless is the faction for the brave.
They have tattoos and have many piercings all over their body. They always wear black and
have the job of protecting people. Erudite is the faction of the intelligent people and have a
thirst of knowledge. They have to wear blue and usually wear glasses because they think it
makes them look smarter. The Erudite supply all the smart researchers and teachers. Amity
is the faction for peace and kindness. They wear red and yellow and always seem happy.
They are the people who provide agriculture. The last faction is the Candor faction. The
Candor faction is where trustworthy is everything. They never lie and have truth tests every
day. The Candor people wear black suits and white ties. The Candor supply all the truthful
judges to make sure all the accused people are telling the truth. The book Divergent has two
people that tell the story, Tris and Four. The protagonists in Divergent are Tris and Four. Tris
and Four are both from Abnegation. Tris is a major protagonist because she tries to save the
Abnegation and destroy Jeanine Matthews. She also took the place for Albert when Eric told
Four to throw knives at her. Four is another protagonist because he helped Tris when she
was escaping. He also(because he is a computer whiz) put all the information into a hard
drive to share the information with the rest of the world. Other protagonists such as Will,
Cristina, and Tori all are friends of Tris and help and protect her. They also help her through
all times and stick together always. The mood in this story makes you feel like you are
experiencing what the main characters are feeling right now. The story also makes you feel
very excited and has many cliffhangers.
Divergent was by far the best book I have ever read. Divergent makes you feel like
you are experiencing whenever you are reading it. It has many cliffhangers and makes you
want to read more. In one part of the book where Tris was dangling from the chasm and
Peter, Drew, and Al were about to throw her down, I felt like I was Tris and I feel very
scared. I heard the water below me, Peter, Drew, and Al laughing, and feeling fear like I
never did before. I would definitely recommend it to others that love action and thrilling
books. I think that the author of the book Divergent, Veronica Roth, has definitely achieved
her purpose of making the reader engaged in the book. She especially engages people who

usually don't like books because many people love books that arent boring and have a little
bit of everything, including happiness even though this is supposed to be a scary action type
of book.
I think this book is the best for everyone. Divergent left me wanting to read more(at
that time the next book, Insurgent, wasnt out yet) It also made me feel scared but happy
after I read the whole book. I hope every one will read this book and enjoy it as much as I
do.
