Create Your Own Utopia

Include the following components in the online description of your ideal society.
1. Name of Your Utopian Society
Choose a creative and appropriate name to represent your new society. Explain your choice in a way that
makes the reasons for the name clear.
2. Declaration of Independence
Write a brief statement (23 paragraphs) describing the reasons for your formation of a utopian society. In
other words, what specifically dont you like about current society? How has the current society broken
trust with you? Why do you feel the need to form a more perfect society? You might refer to the U.S.
Declaration of Independence for ideas.

3. Utopian Motto and Seal
Create a slogan or motto that inhabitants of your utopia will follow, and develop a utopian seal. Explain
the meaning and significance of the motto and seal you choose.
The U.S. Motto is E pluribus unum, meaning Out of many, one.

4. Utopian Animal
What animal would symbolize your utopia? Explain your choice, and include a picture of the animal on
your blog.
Example: The Bald Eagle is used to symbolize The United States of America.
5. List of Rules
Develop a list of at least ten rules that all community members will follow. Provide a rationale for each
rule. What are the consequences if members of society break those rules?
The Constitution of the United States as well as the many state and federal laws serve as
examples. You might think of the Bill of Rights as a good model:

6. Governing Body
How will the government of this utopia be structured? Will you have a democracy, an anarchy, a
monarchy, or a dictatorship? How will your utopia make decisions?
Example: The United States has a three-part government, consisting of Congress, the
President, and the Supreme Court.

7. Educational System
What will your education system look like? (Grades, ages, etc.) What subjects will be required? Think
about what skills you want emphasized in your community and the jobs you want people to be prepared
for. How will your education system be different from our current one?
8. Employment
What kind of businesses will you have in your society? How will your society be similar and different
than the Givers? How will it be different from ours?
9. Currency
How will people be paid? What type of monetary unit will your society use? How does it compare to our
dollar? How will you provide for those who are unemployed?
10. Recreation/Entertainment
What types of entertainment will you provide for children? Teenagers? Adults? Elderly? Will you
monitor the entertainment for young children and/or teenagers? How do you plan to maintain cleanliness
and keep up the environment? What type of clothing will be popular?
11. Daily Itinerary
How will utopia inhabitants spend their time during the week? Develop a hypothetical schedule that
community members might follow during a typical day. Your itinerary can be a listing of times and
activities, but it should be broken down by the hour (or a similar time period that is appropriate for your
utopia).
