INFORMATION FOR THE STUDENT

Employability Skills & SACE Capabilities
Learning on-the-job through work experience is a very important component of your PLP. The focus of your
work experience will be to develop a better understanding of a particular industry area as well as developing
the SACE Capabilities through Employability Skills.
Employability Skills help you to perform effectively in the workplace. They are transferable because the
skills you develop in one workplace can be applied and further developed in other workplaces and roles as
well.
The Employability Skills are communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning
and organising, self-management, learning, and technology. These were identified by employers as
essential and relate directly to the SACE Capabilities of communication, citizenship, personal development,
work and learning. They enable you to become responsible and active members of the community.
What is Expected of You?

1. Be punctual. Get to work on time and return promptly from tea breaks and lunch time.
2. Dress suitably for the job. Many employers have written on the work placement agreements
about specific clothes to wear or not wear.reread your workplace agreement.

3. Attend every day. If you are too ill to work then ring in sick (the number is on your workplace
agreement) and then ring the school.

4. Always be friendly, polite and courteous to everyone at the work site.

5. Remember what you learned in Occupational, Health and Safety Welfare lessons and obey all
safety rules.

6. Always show that you are keen and interested. Remember that no one starts at the top--you
will be expected to do minor tasks before graduating to other duties.
7. Accept and follow instructions cheerfully.
8. Ask for help or assistance when you need it. Smart people ask for help.
9. Offer to pay any tea/coffee money.
10. Show initiative. Offer to help someone or work on completing your diary when times are
slow.
11. Keep personal problems at home.
12. Graciously accept constructive criticism.
13. Remember you are on show. Always behave in a way that reflects well on your employer, your
school and yourself.
14. Take care of employers property.
15. Remember to look at your diary each day and complete all entries before Friday.
16. You will need to ask lots of questions to complete the diary so do not wait till the last minute.
17. Remember to thank the employer and other workers at the end of your week
Last Reminders

You are going to be late--telephone the employer as soon as possible

You are too ill to work --- telephone your employer, then telephone the school on 08 8568 5100.
This is very important as it may be the day that your teacher is planning on visiting you at work.
If you have problems during your work experience which you are unable to discuss in the
workplace---telephone your PLP teacher or Mr Swan on 08 8568 5100 as soon as possible.
