To the Parents and Students

My name is Ms. Lewis, and I will be your second grade teacher for the school
year of 2015-2016. I am very excited to meet all of you and your parents, and I

2
cannot wait to see what the school year holds for us. I want to tell you all a little
about myself before our year gets off to a great start. I attended Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College with a two year degree in human sciences, and I graduated with
my early childhood degree from Georgia Southwestern. I plan to start the Masters
program soon, but right now I am busy planning an exciting new school year for you
all! I love to spend time with my family and friends. I love animals, and I like to go
shopping.

When students misbehave or show disrespect to the teacher, staff
member, adult, or other students, they will be asked to move down their
clip I have created with their name printed on the front. The levels of the
chart starting from the top include: Excellent, Good Job, Disappointed,
Very Disappointed. If the clip is moved down twice, they will sign the book,
and record what they have done. On the third chance, administration will
be called. If a childs clip is moved up for good behavior or good deed,
they will receive a piece of candy after each day.

Upcoming Projects for August

I will be sending out a letter for each project we will be doing throughout the
school year with a rubric. The paper will be in the childs notebook at least
2weeks ahead of time. The first project will be due the second week of
school, but the rest you will be given 2 weeks.
In each newsletter for every month, I will give the name, date, and small
description of each project to help you get started!

Monday, August 9th:

Oh the Places You Will Go On the first day of school, we will read Oh the
Places You Will Go by Dr. Seuss. You will create a hot air balloon out of
paper, decorate it, and write what you want to be when you grow up. In this
packet, I have attached the directions sheet and rubric.

Thursday, August 13th:

What I Did Over the Summer Create a poster or flip book of what you did
over the summer! Please include at least 3 activities you did over the
summer. Include pictures. These can be a photograph or hand drawn. Be
creative! We will share these as a class.

Thursday, August 27th:

Life Cycles We will be discussing and learning about all sorts of animal life
cycles in the month of August. For this project, create a visual of the animal
of your choice except for the ones we discuss in class which include: chicken,
butterfly, frog, and turtle. The visual could be a poster, PowerPoint, booklet,
or model (models are always fun to see!). Please make sure that the animals
life cycle is in the correct order. Include steps and facts about each step of
the life cycles.

During the 2015-16 school year, students in Georgia will take a new
standardized test, Georgia Milestones, to assess academic achievement.
These tests replace the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs), End
of Course Tests (EOCTs), and the writing assessments (Beaudette). The test
includes open-ended questions and writing assessments. The websites above
list additional information of the testing.
We as a class will be working hard throughout the school year to prepare for
our end of the year standardized test. Here are some tips for us to shake off
those nerves and not be so worried.
Testing Tips For the Future

Get lots of rest.

Eat a healthy breakfast.
Listen carefully.
Be focused.

Try your best!

Oh the Places You Will Go

Due Monday August 9th

On the first day of school we read Oh the Places You Will Go by Dr. Seuss. Create
and decorate a hot air balloon out of paper or any other idea you may have. Write
on the balloon what you want to be when you grow up or the places you want to go.
We will share our balloons and ideas as a class. Below I have listed some examples.
No rubric is included; this is just a fun activity for the class to get to know one
another, and enjoy sharing! This will be graded on participation.
