Unit Theme/Issue of Inquiry/Narrative

Inquiry into the reasons behind why/how stretching improves your health
Prior knowledge includes the students knowledge about physical fitness, physical anatomy, and understanding of how
working our muscles makes us stronger?
Links to previous grade Health and Physical Education core competecies

Rationale: This unit of study is important because it encompasses elements of 3 subjects in the BC curriculum.
I am teaching this unit to encourage and develop my students curiosity and ability to develop meaningful and interesting questions that

can then be turned into research ideas. We will then present that research and find ways to share our finding within our community.

Understandings:

Essential Questions:

Students will investigate, wonder, and discuss research on how

stretching makes us feel, how stretching reduces illness,
improve our health in general.
Students will be able to formulate questions that
are relevant and meaningful
Students will turn their questions into research
topics and create a medium on which to present their
research
students will be able to share their learnings within
their community

Why do people stretch?

How does stretching benefit our bodies?
How do we share our findings with our community?
Why does my body move differently than yours?
What questions might spark student interest / engagement
in the topic?

Students will then understand how stretching or yoga can

benefit their bodies, improve quality of life, reduce illness, and
improve overall health.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Formative Assessments

Summative Assessments

Create a rubric together with the student on how their

projects will be marked

Presentation and write up based on rubric created together

Observations: observe how the students work in their

groups, their progress and their direction of research.
Mini Conferences: Speak with students individually and
ask how they feel about the project and if they need any
additional support.
Reflection: Have students write or blog about a midpoint
reflection and include an action plan.
Allow students to hand in their research projects before
hand to receive feedback and formative assessment.

Ability to influence and get their information out into their

community

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Should be Differentiated
Potential Barriers to Success / Areas to Differentiate:
Engagement
Motivation
Support of the school and other teachers

Introducing the Unit:

Students will engage in yoga sessions that will help us become centered and improve our health.
Students may wonder how/why essentially stretching improves our help?
Guide students through an inquiry based project based on this wonder?

Sequence of Lessons: The basics of what you plan to do in each lesson of the unit.
