    Combine history and culture to the development of rock and roll.


    Identify musical characteristics and artists of each decade.
    Associate an artists life events to his/her artistry.
    Understand the influence of major events on the development of rock and roll.
    Recognize an artist as a human being as well as an idol.
    Recognize how social issues and pop culture influence artists.

    Grading:
    Tests written and listening formats.
    Daily Grades: creating play lists, journal entries, group participation, classwork

    Materials Required: Notebook, pen, loose-leaf and device.


    Schedule:
    First Quarter- 1950s How life events affect artists, Elton John unit, early roots of Rock and
    Roll, Early 1950s rock, teen idols, doo wop, other music genres of the 1950s, Elvis Presley unit,
    radio in the 1950s, American Bandstand and influence on culture and artists, musical taste of the
    1950s, famous 50s groups, Buddy Holly, girl groups, racism and rock
    Second Quarter- 1960s British Invasion, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Motown, Civil
    Rights, Garage Rock, One Hit Wonders, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Folk Rock, 1960s events
    that shaped music, Vietnam War and Rebel Songs, The Doors, girl groups, Simon and Garfunkel,
    Heavy Metal
    Third Quarter- 1970s and 1980S- Soul, Funk, Disco, Feminism and Music, The Electric
    Guitar, Bluegrass, Metal, American Top 40, How the Beatles became single artists, artists who
    left us too early, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, Phil Collins, Van Halen,
    The Police, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Metallica, Queen , Journey, Pink Floyd, Bon
    Jovi, Whitney Houston, MTV
    Fourth Quarter- 1990s-2000s- teen pop, dance pop, British pop, punk rock, alternative rock,
    Europop, hip-hop, grunge, rap, singer-songwriters, R&B, Latin music, country, American Idol,
    Boyz II Men, Eric Clapton, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, Nirvana, Snoop Dog, Hootie and the
    Blowfish, Pearl Jam, Seal

    Grading:
    Tests: 50% of your grade
    Daily Grades and Homework: 50 % of your grade which includes class assignments, journal entries and
    quizzes.

    What You Must Have Each Class:

    Your textbook, notebook, pen and loose-leaf.


    All assignments or completed homework.
    A positive attitude.

    What You Must Do During Every Class:

    Be respectful at all times without excuse.


    Be prepared to hand in homework, take a quiz or test and participate during class.
    Points will be taken off for any late work. (See absence policy below)
    Be on time. Students who arrive late will not enter class without a late pass
    Take notes in your notebook. Notes may not be taken on loose-leaf.
    Be in full uniform- always.
    Raise your hand for permission to speak.
    Do not bring any food or drinks to class.
    You may not take your phone, tablet or laptop out unless you have my permission.

    Absences:

    You are responsible for any missed work. Assignments will always be posted on my
    website.
    Upon returning from an absence you have 2 classes to turn in missing work. Points will
    be taken off for work that is more than 2 classes late.
