    The band members of the Sipekne'katik First Nation recently voted to accept a proposed Matrimonial Real Property Law. Of the 534 total votes, 510 supported the law while 24 did not support it. As a result of the majority approval, the Chief announced that the Sipekne'katik Matrimonial Real Property Law would be implemented immediately. The new law means that in matters of matrimonial real property decided in the justice system, the band's own law will now apply instead of the national First Nations law. A copy of the approved Sipekne'katik law was included for members' records.

    Sipeknekatik Matrimonial Real Property

    During the past few weeks off-reserve band members were receiving mail in ballots to
    vote for or against the proposed Sipeknekatik Matrimonial Real Property Law. On
    September 24, 2015 in Indian Brook First Nation on reserve band members went to the
    polls to vote for or against the proposed Sipeknekatik Matrimonial Real Property Law.

    There were 510 votes to support the Sipeknekatik Matrimonial Real Property Law,
    with 24 Band members voting not to support the proposed law. There were 2
    spoiled ballots. Based on these results I am pleased to share the Sipeknekatik
    Matrimonial Real Property has been accepted and will be implemented effective
    immediately.

    What this means is when Matrimonial Real Property decisions are made by the Justice
    System, our law will be applied to the situation instead of the National First Nations
    Matrimonial Real Property law. I have included a copy of the Sipeknekatik Matrimonial
    Real Property law for your records.
