Readingpromotionprogram
Goal:
Students will nominate and vote for books to win our very own Panther Pride Book Award
in order to promote reading throughout the grade levels.
Objective:
75% of the students will read at least 3 books from the nominated books and
respond to reading comprehension prompts.
What, When, How and Who:
Phase 1:
Before the year starts the faculty will decide what qualities they would like students
looking for in books they read, There will be one award for K-2 and another for 3-5. The
criteria will align with the mission/vision of the school, currently to improve reading
comprehension of students. (Hopefully this will not have to be done each year and will be able
to become an annual thing.) This phase will the librarian and teachers working together.
Phase 2:
Late October-December: Students will nominate books that they believe will fit the
criteria by filling out a form summarizing the book and explaining how it fits all sets of the
criteria. The librarian will sort through the entries and pull out 5-8 of the forms that do the best
job (these students will get a prize). Students will have about a month from when the project is
announced to put in their nominations.
Phase 3:
Winter Break-Read Across America Week: From there students will be introduced
through book talks and trailers to the books up for nomination in their grade levels. They will
have about 2 months to read at least 3 of the books on the nomination list. They can fill out a
review form (the form will focus on the comprehension area of need) and submit it to the
librarian to prove they have read. Once they have read three of them they will be allowed to
vote on their favorite. Voting will take place week before or of Read Across America Week. The
librarian will spearhead this phase, encourage kids, make sure the library has enough of those
books, and create/store all forms. But they will need the help of the teachers, encouraging
students, allowing them to fill out forms, even doing read alouds with the nominated books.
Phase 4:
End of Read Across America Week A celebration for the books will be held! The book
that won will be announced and a special award sticker placed on their cover, they will get a
spot on the award shelf. The librarian will hold the celebrations with each class during their
library time.
Why?
This will help promote reading and reviewing books throughout the school. Also since it is a
school specific thing children will be more invested in the program.
How will it be evaluated:
The program will be evaluated based on how many students read the nominated books and
voted. A survey will be given to all students to see who read the books/which ones before the
program and again after. The librarian will use these results and the amount/quality of forms
turned in to evaluate the success. Hopefully this is something that could be done annually and
the librarian would see growth each year.
