Assignment 2: (PO1, PO2, CO2, C3, C4)

This document contains two questions regarding vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data: 1) VLE data for an acetonitrile/1-butanol system is given. Students are asked to plot the data and determine van Laar parameters, then use these to find the pressure and vapor composition in equilibrium with a 35% liquid mixture. 2) Data is provided for an ethyl acetate/ethanol azeotrope. Students are asked to calculate activity coefficients at the azeotrope using given vapor pressures, then use Margules equations with the activity coefficients to determine the vapor composition over a 40% ethyl acetate liquid mixture.

b) By using the van Laar parameters in a), determine the total pressure and the vapor phase
composition of the system that is in equilibrium with 35% mole liquid mixture of acetonitrile
at 333.15 K.

QUESTION 2
(PO1, PO2, CO2, C2, C4)
The system ethyl acetate (1) and ethanol (2) forms an azeotrope at pressure of 0.64 bar, and
temperature of 60C. The mole fraction of ethyl acetate in the liquid phase is 0.6. The vapor
pressures for ethyl acetate and ethanol at 60C are 0.560 bar and 0.468 bar, respectively.
a) Calculate the activity coefficient for ethyl acetate and ethanol at azeotrope.
(4 marks)
b) Using values in part a), determine the composition of the vapor over a liquid solution at 60C
that contains 40 mole % ethyl acetate. Consider the following Margules equations to
describe the behavior of this system:

ln 1 x2 2 A12 2 A21 A12 x1

ln 2 x12 A21 2 A12 A21 x2

where

1, 2 = Activity coefficient of species 1 and 2

A12, A21 = Parameters for Margules equation
x1, x2 = Liquid mole fraction of species 1 and 2
