Homework Set 3

1.

Pump system
Water is to be pumped by a submerged pump to a pool for which the free surface is
30 m above the lower reservoir water level. The pump is a 5 KW pump with an
efficiency of 80%. The diameter of the pipe is 7 cm on the intake side and 5 cm on
the discharge side. The head loss in the piping may be assumed to be 4 m.
a. Determine the maximum flowrate of the water
b. Determine the pressure difference across the pump.
c. The elevation difference between the pump inlet and outlet and may be
neglected.

2.

Turbine system
Water flows through a hydraulic turbine at a rate of 0.6 m3/s. The flow enters the turbine
through a 32-cm diameter pipe and exits the turbine through a through a 27-cm diameter
pipe. The pressure drop in the turbine is measured by a mercury manometer to be 1.5 m.
The efficiency of the turbine system is estimated to be 80 percent. Use this information to
determine the electric power output.

3.

Drag force on parachute

A person is planning to go parachuting. You have been asked to estimate the persons terminal
velocity while parachuting. Assume the weight of the parachutist and the parachute weigh a total
of 900 N. The average density of the air may be assumed to be 1.21 kg/m3. The drag coefficient is
given as 1.3.
The diameter of the parachute (as viewed looking upward from below) is 6 m.
a.
b.

Use this information to determine the terminal velocity of the parachutist.

At this terminal velocity, what is the Reynolds Number.
