I will be working with your child for RTI (response to intervention) during
school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to target and improve their reading
skills. This is a fluency folder your child should practice from each night. Fluency is
the rate at which they read along with accuracy. By increasing your childs
fluency, you will also help them increase their reading comprehension. This
practice folder will also be a record of the progress your child is making.

wpm (words per minute) = words read in 1 min. mistakes = fluency rate
These are the steps for your childs oral reading practice:
1. Child will read sounds/words/passage to teacher (cold read/first read).
Child reads as many words as he/she can in 1 minute.
Teacher goes over childs errors and models how to read fluently
Child and teacher read passage together (teacher reading slightly faster)
Student practices fluency during RTI and at home
* This is how I need your support at home. *
2. Child reads passage to parent/adult.
Have your child practice reading the passage to you at least 2 times a week,
each day in 1 minute intervals to increase their oral reading fluency. As they
read, please correct your child if they say a word incorrectly. We do not want
them to practice saying something incorrectly. They do not need to read the
passage in its entirety, have them read a little past where they ended
previously.
3. Child reads to teacher again a few days later (hot read).
Teacher will log down their progress for the passage.
Thank you very much for your partnership in your childs education!
Sincerely,
Ms. Lindsey
