Division of Education
Lesson Plan
Student: Michelle Arguelles
Course: EDU 521
Grade: 2nd
Topic: Solar System

Professor: Maria Esposito

Date: November 29, 2015
Content Area: Science
Instructional Objective

After further discussion on solar system and watching a short video on our planets,
students will be able to define what a planet is, identify and name the planets in our
solar system and state how many planets we have in our solar system.
Standards and Indicators
Science Standard (NYS)
o Students will identify and name the planets in our solar system
o Students will state how many planets there are in our solar system
o Students will have more of a visual understanding of planets
Indicator: This will be evident after students watch a short video on planets and
further discussion with teacher and peers and receive handouts on planets. Also
more visual understanding after class activity on planets
Motivator
Students will watch a short video on planets https://www.youtube.com/watch?

After watching a short video on planets, students will receive a handout sheet on
planets (given a few minutes to work on). After handout, students will go to centers
and do a class activity on planets

Adaptations

Students with a visual learning style will experiment with different font sizes and
styles to enhance readability (on computer).
Students with an auditory learning will read material aloud to them and engage in
conversation about the subject matter.
Students with a kinesthetic learning style will use role play or dramatize concepts.
Students can move objects around to dramatize a concept or act out the concept
themselves.
Differentiation of Instruction
o Tier 1: students will work independently at own pace and will identify and
name all planets.
o Tier 2: students will work with some assistance and will be able to identify
and name most planets
o Tier 3: students will work more assistance and will be able to identify and
name a few planets
Developmental Procedures

-As a class, we will expand our discussion on the solar system and introduce
planets; then discuss what students know about the planets
-Students will watch a short video on planets
-After short video on planets, students will be given a handout and work
independently
-After a few minutes working on handout, students will go to centers and teacher
will demonstrate planet activity
-Students will work on planet activity
Assessment
Students will successfully identify and name all 8 planets
Students will successfully state how many planets and describe each planet
Independent Practice
Students will be given two take home worksheets on lessons. Worksheet #1 will be
to correctly put the planets in order starting closest to the sun. Worksheet #2 will be
to find the names of the planets in a word search.
Follow-up: Direct teacher intervention and Academic enrichment
Direct teacher intervention: The teacher will work independently with the
students who needs any help and provide additional reading materials and offer
tutoring for extra support
Academic enrichment: Students may use iPad or computer to continue research
and exploration on solar system and planets
