1. THESIS STATEMENT
Present the projects argument or interpretation in two sentences. If you are using the NHD theme, you might want to
make it evident in your thesis statement.
The Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893 had a strong influence in America from 1900-1950 and
so forth. This included architecture, culture, and agriculture.
2. SUMMARY OF PROJECT
Briefly explain your project and its conclusion. Include: How and why did change happen and what was the impact?
Why is it historically significant? What historical meaning or importance can we learn from your findings?
The Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893 had a change in America because of the collaboration
of inventions from thousands of people. As millions of people from all around the world attended
the fair, the sharing of ideas spread and many useful concepts were passed on through the years.
Many inventions, such as electrical sidewalks (used in airports), were displayed. Also, the way
the fair was built inspired much of the architecture we see today, such as the skyscrapers we see
in the cities. The fair is historically significant because it was a way for relief for Chicago right
after the Great Chicago Fire, as a result, it inspired Chicago and he rest of America to culturally
expand. After going through devastating moments, there was a great way to not only get back on
track, but improve the world.
3. Required for projects using the National History Day theme only.
Time:
Explain how this project integrates the NHD theme Exploration, Encounter, & Exchange in [Chicago/IL] History into
its argument.
4. PROCESS
1. What historical question did you start off withand how did it change once you began
doing your research?
The historical question I began with was The Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893 had an
impact on Americas culture and industry. This changed as I noticed that the key impacts
actually included more of architecture and commerce and I did not have a certain time period.
2. What kinds of sources did you use as evidence to develop your argument (for example,
letters, photographs, government documents, interviews, etc.)?
The type of sources I used mostly included primary source images. I used photographs
that were taken of the fair to get a better idea of how it was like. As well as photographs
of the inventions and buildings at the fair. Other sources included secondary sources of
articles and websites dedicated to displaying the many aspects of the fair. I also used
newspaper articles from the time period the fair took place that advertised it.
3. Select one piece of evidence that you used and explain how it influenced your argument.
By the turn of the century, the first permanent iteration of the concept of the Midway
was established at Coney Island, New York, and has been followed by scores of permanent
amusement and theme parks throughout the country--including Disneyland and Disney
World. This piece of evidence informs readers about one of the many large influences on
America today. People not only from across the country, but from around the world, visit
Disney parks and enjoy quality family time and it is acknowledged now that it was inspired
by the designs introduced by the Worlds Fair in 1853.
