Risk Assessment Assignment

Introduction to Risk Assessment Framework
As guides we take on the responsibility of keeping our clients as safe as
possible while providing a worthwhile experience. Ensuring that clients are as safe
as possible we must take all risks into consideration. To manage these risks we set
up ways of identifying and rating the amount of risk involved with each activity. We
have created our own Risk Assessment scale based on the HIRA and Yamnuska
Exposure Scale. The goal of our scale is to identify, limit, manage and resolve risks
that could potentially happen.

We created our risk assessment framework mostly using the Yamnuska Risk
analysis scale as a guide. We found it to be more user friendly while allowing for
things to be added on or changed to improve upon it as individual organizations feel
fit. For example we felt that both risk assessment scales did not take into
consideration the time it would take to adequately respond to an incident or an
injury (it would take a lot longer to treat and evacuate a patient who broke their
ankle on day 4 of an 8-day hike than it does to treat minor scrapes and cuts from a
minor cycling crash.
Our framework is easy to use: whoever is carrying out the risk assessment whether
it is the guide or operations manager etc, uses their judgment to analyze the hazard
and give a rating for all 4 categories (Consequence, hazard exposure, probability of
incident and response time.) Next they multiply the ratings together to calculate the
risk. This quantitative measurement of risk is then compared to our colour coded
risk urgency assessment giving the guide a better understanding of the risk
