Space Colony

By: Luis, Jordan, Trevor, Makenna

Location

Arabia, Mars
Latitude 0 to 30 degrees and longitude 315 to 360 degrees

We chose this location is because the nights get cold and if we are closer to the
equator then it will be warmer than anywhere else making it so we don't have to
heat the dome as much. This causing it so we don't have to use are energy as
much. Also if we are at a creator we can use the blockage from the high winds and
storms on mars.

Self-Sufficient
We will be farming using turbines and Solar panels to power the heating system
and Oxygen filter. Also for the lighting for the dome during storms because they
could last for longer than a week. We will also be storing the extra energy not used
from the turbines and Solar panels on the outer area of the dome. Also the
animals and plants will be separated by the research and living areas by tunnels
with air locks just in case of disaster or construction on them. Also the plants will
filter out the carbon dioxide and the top of the dome will have a sprinkler system
with the waste water.

Mars Calendar

Days on Mars are about 40 minutes longer than Earth

684 Earths days in a Mars year
We will use a scanner connected to a satellite to tell us where we are
compared to the sun
Also we can use a sundial in the main middle dome and it will tell us the time
with just a 40 minutes more on the dial to tell what time it is on mars.
We will synchronize with earth by using 12 hours a day because 40 minute
isn't much of a difference and the dome will provide an artificial habitat using
earth time and use daylight sensors to tell if the lights need to turn on or off
during the 24 hours and 40 min day.

CELS Unit
Where will you get your food? How long will it last? Greenhouse, Livestock, and
supply ships every in 4 months. It will last as long as the crops keep growing.
Crops include; Potatoes, Corn, Lettuce, Carrots. Livestock include; Cows, Rabbits,
Deer/Caribou.
How will you handle biological waste?=Use the Organic waste for fertilizer for the
green house plants.
What are the best ways to grow your crops? Keeping the crops/livestock in its own
shut in space, keeping up with the needed food, water, and oxygen.

CELS Unit
How and where, will you prepare, dispense, and store food? We will be dispensing
food in the cafeteria portion of the domes which will have lots of storage and the
food will be prepared for the colonist at certain times a day.
How will you handle it if your food supply becomes contaminated? We will
dispense the contaminated food and restart the growing and find a way to prevent
repeated contamination.

CELS Unit
How are you providing for the nutritional needs of each person? We will be taking
a vitamin D and Vitamin K pill daily. The pills will be shipped in every 4 months We
will be getting vitamin C from the cow milk and Vitamin A from carrots.
What method will scientists use to enter/exit the station? We will set up air lock
tunnels leading out of the dome. Each tunnel will end with an air lock so if
something happens, we are entering and exiting safely, while still having oxygen.

SAT Unit
How will you study/explore the surface of your colony?
We will use drills and rovers to explore outside of the domes taking temperatures
and looking for new energy sources.

SAT Unit
What kind of transport/power sources are needed ? We will use cars with a dome
that regulate oxygen levels with at least 2 days worth and use battery power and a
back up gas power that last 100 miles. Each time the transport returns to the
docking station it will be refilled for the next mission. Also the gas will be made
from the corn grown in the greenhouse.

SAT Unit
What are the expected weather conditions ? The wind causes many dust storms
that can last many days or weeks on mars. We have a backup power for 2 months
at most just in case the wind destroys the turbines and the solar panels can't get
sun light.

SAT Unit
What are the physical/mental effects of space travel and living away from earth?
Also how will your colonist maintain their physical and mental health ? The families
can send them things every time the shipment is launched into space so they don't
get homesick. Also we have vitamins to keep their bones healthy from the space
travel and we will have exercise equipment in the Recreational area.

SAT unit
How will your colony acces, process, and store the natural resources available ?
We will use lower areas to keep things cold and we will have a farmer or farmers
to harvest the crops and animals for food. Also the cook will process the food in the
cafeteria for the colonist.

SAT Unit
What Innovations will be used that were not available for space exploration 40
years ago ? We will use Oxygen filters which filter out harmful gasses and collects
the little oxygen and separate it from the carbon dioxide for humans, Animals, and
plants.
Also we will use the maned rovers powered off of gas and electricity while having
a computer regulating temperature and oxygen.

Health and Recreation

Where will colonists go to participate in sports or other physical activities? We will
use the recreational dome for those activities.
How will you provide for the personal care and hygiene for your colony? Have
dispensing machines that give soap, deodorant, toothpaste, Vitamins, and ect.
These will be located in the dorms and supplies will vary dependent on which
dorm they are in.

Health and Recreation Unit

What kind of medical facilities will your colony have/are you prepared to handle
emergency treatment ? We will have emergency equipment located in each dome
dependent on size to determine how many stations. Also in the recreational area
for medicine and a nurse for other injuries.
What kind of living areas will your colonists have?.we will have 2 major dorms in 2
separate domes one for Girls one for Boys. As shown in the map on slide 5.

Health and Recreational Unit

How will you address a new disease/illness not known on earth? We will have
doctors treat the patient and see what he has and than try to figure out how to
cure him. This will also be researched about this planet in the research dome.
How will you handle extreme mental distress? We will have a therapist to try to
help them and separated area for them just in case of disaster or danger to other
colonist.

Control Center Unit

How will you monitor all systems and alert others to different emergencies ? We
will have alarms in all stations and computers to send messages through the
domes to tell where and what the emergency is.
How will you report your findings to earth ? We will use small capsules and/or
send messages just for pictures or digital samples.
How will you get supplies from earth to your colony ? We will have rocket powered
capsules that can be sent in the general direction of the colony and be able to be
guided by a person from our colony into a collecting area by the arrival and
departure dome.

Control Center Unit

We will you store and retrieve your findings ?
The departure and arrival dome will send out explores and rovers to find the
samples or take pictures and they will use a tunnel system the sucks them from
outside the dome into the research area for scientist to study the research area
will also have storage area underground for larger or small objects and closets for
equipment.

Control Center Unit

How will you handle general meetings and discussions for your colony ?
We will have arrangements and weekly meeting to discuss findings in the cafeteria
and a projector showing pictures of those findings.
How will you deal with language barriers among the colonist ?
We will have translators robotic or people to take care of the discussions between
the different languages.
How will you govern your colony ? We will have ranks on years and experience for
each unit and one head member like a president and the head people of the of
each unit will be like a congress.

Habit Support Unit

How will you regulate the internal atmosphere? We will have domes with filters
that separate the carbon dioxide and oxygen and separate them to the needed
domes.
What sources of energy will you depend on ? We will use solar panels and
turbines
What are pros and cons of each source of energy- The storms may generate too
much wind and ruin our turbines and block the sun. The Pros are that we can rely
on the power generated by the wind and sun and not on sent in batteries.

Habitat Support Unit

If your primary power source becomes unavailable what back up source can you
use ? Well if our solar panels go out then we rely on wind energy and vice versa,
but if both go out we have a 2 month supply of backup power.
How will you manage colonies energy demands? We will have meters for
monitoring power for each dome.
How will you manage non-biological waste? The solids send into the ground
without harm to the planet with underground landfills which will be under extreme
heat that is far away from the domes.

Habitat Support Unit

How will you provide for emergency energy, air, water, and supplies ? - Have a
backup supply for 3 months then request supplies from earth during that time of
fixing the problem.
How will you manage a catastrophic event ? - Have many backup supplies and
backup communicators so we can contact earth for help.
