Department of Treasury: Jack Lew

I choose to write about the Department of Treasury and the secretary of that department
Jack Lew. The department was established in 1789 by an act of congress to manage government
resources and was first headed by Alexander Hamilton, who almost single handedly created our
system. Today that department does so much more, it holds itself responsible handling our
resources and helping to create more opportunities for citizens to help themselves. It collects
taxes on firearms and provides technical advice for industry. Its ran by Jacob Lew who has
worked in budget management since the Clinton administration.
Senator Lew runs the Department of Treasury. The Department of Treasury promotes
economic growth, support job creation, investment, and economic stability. It also oversees the
production of coins and currency, the disbursement of payments to the public, revenue
collection, and the funds to run the federal government. Thanks to the attacks on the world trade
center the ATF was split off into Homeland Security.
Under the Treasury department is the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. This
Bureau is responsible for enforcing and administering laws covering the production, use and
distribution of alcohol and tobacco products. They also collect excise taxes for firearms and
ammunition. The T.T.B. runs the National Revenue Center which reconciles returns, reports and
claims: screens applications and promptly issues permits; and provides expert technical
assistance for industry.
Jack Lew received his A.B. from Harvard College and his J.D. from Georgetown University
Law Center. Lew also worked as an attorney in private practice before working as a deputy in
Bostons Office of Management and Budget. In 1994 he served as Associate Director for

Legislative Affairs and Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Clinton
Administration. From 2006 to 2008 he worked as the COO at Citigroup and then served as the
first Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources from 2009 to 2010. Three years
later he was sworn in as Treasury Secretary.
Since its in Inception the duty of the Department of Treasury has been to balance our budget.
But over the years they have grown just like our country and has shifted to take on more
Responsibility. Helping out the financial sector with advice and promoting job growth to help
our economy and the citizens. As well as choosing capable people to lead in these roles such as
Jack Lew. The Department of Treasury is the backbone of our country as a capitalist society and
helps our country in numerous ways. Thats why I choose this to write about because its one the
important departments we have.
