likeD.H.LawrencedidintheRockingHorseWinner.SirArthurConanDoyleactuallysolved
somemysteriesinhislife.SomeofthemhehadsolvedarerelatedtosomeofSherlockHolmes.

OnMay22,1859,ArthurConanDoylewasborninEdinburgh,Scotland.In1890hisnovel,

StudyinScarlet
,introducedthecharacterofDetectiveSherlockHolmes.Doylewouldgoonto
write60storiesaboutSherlockHolmes.HealsostrovetospreadhisSpiritualismfaiththrougha
seriesofbooksthatwerewrittenfrom1918to1926.Doylediedofaheartattackin
Crowborough,EnglandonJuly7,1930.

OnMay22,1859,ArthurConanDoylewasborntoanaffluent,strictIrishCatholicfamilyin
Edinburgh,Scotland.AlthoughDoyle'sfamilywaswellrespectedintheartworld,hisfather,
Charles,whowasalifelongalcoholic,hadfewaccomplishmentstospeakof.Doyle'smother,
Mary,wasalivelyandwelleducatedwomanwholovedtoread.Sheparticularlydelightedin

tellingheryoungsonoutlandishstories.Hergreatenthusiasmandanimationwhilespinningwild
talessparkedthechild'simagination.AsDoylewouldlaterrecallinhisbiography,"Inmyearly
childhood,asfarasIcanrememberanythingatall,thevividstoriesshewouldtellmestandout
soclearlythattheyobscuretherealfactsofmylife."

Attheageof9,DoylebidatearfulgoodbyetohisparentsandwasshippedofftoEngland,
wherehewouldattendHodderPlace,StonyhurstaJesuitpreparatoryschoolfrom1868to
1870.DoylethenwentontostudyatStonyhurstCollegeforthenextfiveyears.ForDoyle,the
boardingschoolexperiencewasbrutal:manyofhisclassmatesbulliedhim,andtheschool
practicedruthlesscorporalpunishmentagainstitsstudents.Overtime,Doylefoundsolaceinhis
flairforstorytelling,anddevelopedaneageraudienceofyoungerstudents.

WhenDoylegraduatedfromStonyhurstCollegein1876,hisparentsexpectedthathewould
followinhisfamily'sfootstepsandstudyart,sotheyweresurprisedwhenhedecidedtopursuea
medicaldegreeattheUniversityofEdinburghinstead.Atmedschool,Doylemethismentor,
ProfessorDr.JosephBell,whosekeenpowersofobservationwouldlaterinspireDoyletocreate
hisfamedfictionaldetectivecharacter,SherlockHolmes.AttheUniversityofEdinburgh,Doyle
alsohadthegoodfortunetomeetclassmatesandfuturefellowauthorsJamesBarrieandRobert
LouisStevenson.Whileamedicalstudent,Doyletookhisownfirststabatwriting,withashort
storycalled
TheMysteryofSasassaValley
.Thatwasfollowedbyasecondstory,

DuringDoyle'sthirdyearofmedicalschool,hetookashipsurgeon'spostonawhalingship
sailingfortheArcticCircle.ThevoyageawakenedDoyle'ssenseofadventure,afeelingthathe
incorporatedintoastory,
CaptainofthePoleStar
.

In1880,Doylereturnedtomedicalschool.BackattheUniversityofEdinburgh,Doylebecame
increasinglyinvestedinSpiritualismor"Psychicreligion,"abeliefsystemthathewouldlater
attempttospreadthroughaseriesofhiswrittenworks.BythetimehereceivedhisBachelorof
Medicinedegreein1881,DoylehaddenouncedhisRomanCatholicfaith.

Doyle'sfirstpayingjobasadoctortooktheformofamedicalofficer'spositionaboardthe
steamshipMayumba,travellingfromLiverpooltoAfrica.AfterhisstintontheMayumba,Doyle
settledinPlymouth,Englandforatime.Whenhisfundswerenearlytappedout,herelocatedto
Portsmouthandopenedhisfirstpractice.Hespentthenextfewyearsstrugglingtobalancehis
burgeoningmedicalcareerwithhiseffortstogainrecognitionasanauthor.Doylewouldlater
giveupmedicinealtogether,inordertodevoteallofhisattentiontohiswritingandhisfaith.

In1885,whilestillstrugglingtomakeitasawriter,Doylemetandmarriedhisfirstwife,Louisa
Hawkins.ThecouplemovedtoUpperWimpoleStreetandhadtwochildren,adaughteranda
son.In1893,Louisawasdiagnosedwithtuberculosis.WhileLouisawasailing,Doyledeveloped
anaffectionforayoungwomannamedJeanLeckie.Louisaultimatelydiedoftuberculosisin
Doyle'sarms,in1906.Thefollowingyear,DoylewouldremarrytoJeanLeckie,withwhomhe
wouldhavetwosonsandadaughter.

In1886,newlymarriedandstillstrugglingtomakeitasanauthor,Doylestartedwritingthe
mysterynovel
ATangledSkein
.Twoyearslater,thenovelwasrenamed
AStudyinScarlet
and
publishedin
Beeton'sChristmasAnnual
.
AStudyinScarlet
,whichfirstintroducedthewildly
popularcharactersDetectiveSherlockHolmesandhisassistant,Watson,finallyearnedDoyle
therecognitionhehadsodesired.Itwasthefirstof60storiesthatDoylewouldpenabout
SherlockHolmesoverthecourseofhiswritingcareer.Also,in1887,Doylesubmittedtwo
lettersabouthisconversiontoSpiritualismtoaweeklyperiodicalcalled
Light
.
HavingrecentlybeendiagnosedwithAnginaPectoris,Doylestubbornlyignoredhisdoctor's
warnings,andinthefallof1929,embarkedonaspiritualismtourthroughtheNetherlands.He
returnedhomewithchestpainssoseverethatheneededtobecarriedonshore,andwas
thereafteralmostentirelybedriddenathishomeinCrowborough,England.Risingonelasttime
onJuly7,1930,Doylecollapsedanddiedinhisgardenwhileclutchinghisheartwithonehand
andholdingaflowerintheother
