Documentary Issues

Opinion and Bias

Opinion is a view on something that isnt always based on fact, and bias is like opinion but
stronger and more prejudice. In documentaries, opinion and bias isnt itself an issue, unless
its being forced on the viewer. Consumers should be given the facts and opinions of the
person in the documentary, but then given the flip side so they can form their own views on
the subject. The news channel Fox has had major accusations based on it being very Rightwing Leaning when it comes to a lot of their stories.
This issue shouldnt affect me due to the nature of the production.

Accuracy
This is one of the most important parts of documentaries, as without accurate facts or
statistics, the documentary will be instantly disregarded and will not be viewed. Furthermore,
it will damage the credibility of further documentaries produced by that company. One
example is the controversy around The Great Global Warming Swindle, which was a
programme on Channel 4. It disputed that global warming is being increased from human
activity. The show was followed by an overwhelming amount of backlash complaints, one of
which was a 176 page document written by a large group of disputing scientists.
To overcome the issue of inaccurate data, I will be checking the validity of the sources I use.
This, in turn, will be done by doing further research on the sources.

Balance and Impartiality

Impartiality is the opposite of bias, in that it is about being objective about situations and not
having prejudice for any side, as well as not preferring benefit to another person over
someone else. An example of this can be found in an BBC documentary titled Wales, Power
and the People. This was criticised by Ofcom for its comments about Margaret Thatchers
impact on Welsh politics which breached the BBC Editorial Guidelines.
As my documentary doesnt have any topics that would need impartiality/wont be affected
by it, there no issues that need to be highlighted

Objectivity and Sensitivity

Within documentaries, it is important to be objective so that you can be sensitive to the needs
of certain people. An example would be when talking about certain companies or
organisations, being indifferent/impartial would make it so they dont sue you for painting
them in a certain light (good or bad).
See Representation below for who I think need to be treated with a sensitive nature.

Representation
This is speaking on behalf of something or someone to describe them in a particular way. In
documentaries, this issue would come up when talking about groups of people, organisations
or other such parties of people. An example would be if talking about Christianity, you would
have to be sure not portray them in a way that is negative or insulting to them, without
certifiable evidence.

There are two main issues that may come up in my documentary. One is that some of the
artists I use in my sad/depressing playlist may be insulted that I will be considering their
songs to be such. The other issue, is when Im questioning some of the interviewees about
why teenagers that are depressed or have mental issues use music as an escape, the wording
of such needs to be careful not to treat them as helpless people who need assistance or
cheering up.

Access and Privacy

This covers making sure those taking part in the documentary are given their rights. This
prohibits the use of recording telephone interviews, hidden mics and cameras, scenes of
extreme suffering and distress, interviewing children, set-up situations and interviews without
prior arrangement. In a case regarding the San Bernardino shooters, there was an instance
involving a still active crime scene in which multiple news correspondents entered the
premises and began rummaging through potential evidence regarding the case.
I will be interviewing up to three teachers (music and psychology) on their opinion about the
results of my experiment and about the topic itself. I will be giving at least a fortnight to ask if
they are available and to give them time to think about what they will say in response. This
will also make sure they are comfortable with being filmed.

Contract with Viewer

This is making sure that you provide what you promise to the viewer in the synopsis of the
production. This is important is documentaries as a lot of them are about educating the
viewer, and so if this isnt achieved their company loses popularity.
I will be promising the viewer factual and scientific insight into how/why music may affect us,
as well as an unrigged social experiment regarding the same topic.
