TUTORIAL 5

USES OF AROMATIC
COMPOUND
• Aromatic compounds are important in industry.
• Key aromatic hydrocarbons of commercial
interest are benzene, toluene, ortho-xylene and
para-xylene
• They are extracted from complex mixtures
obtained by the refining of oil or by distillation
of coal tar, and are used to produce a range of
important chemicals and polymers, including
styrene, phenol, aniline, polyester and nylon
• Other aromatic compounds play key roles in the
biochemistry of all living things.
BENZENE

• Its most widely-produced derivatives include styrene, which is

used to make polymers and plastics, phenol for resins and
adhesives (via cumene), and cyclohexane, which is used in the
manufacture of Nylon. Smaller amounts of benzene are used
to make some types of rubbers, lubricants, dyes, detergents,
drugs, explosives, napalm and pesticides
METHYL BENZENE

• A common solvent, able to dissolve paints, paint thinners, silicone

sealants, many chemical reactants, rubber, printing ink, adhesives (glues),
lacquers, leather tanners, and disinfectants.
• It can also be used as a fullerene indicator, and is a raw material for
toluene diisocyanate (used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam)
and TNT..
• Toluene can be used as an octane booster in gasoline fuels used in
internal combustion engines.
BENZOIC ACID

• Benzoyl chloride, C6H5C(O)Cl is an important starting material for

several benzoic acid derivates like benzyl benzoate, which is used in
artificial flavours and insect repellents.
• Benzoic acid and its salts are used as a food preservative,
represented by the E-numbers E210, E211, E212, and E213. Benzoic
acid inhibits the growth of mold, yeast and some bacteria.
• Benzoic acid is a constituent of Whitfield's Ointment which is used
for the treatment of fungal skin diseases such as tinea, ringworm,
and athlete's foot
PHENOL

• Phenol is also used in the preparation of cosmetics including

sunscreens, hair dyes, and skin lightening preparations
• In cosmetic surgery, phenol serves as an exfoliant. It is also
used in phenolization, a surgical procedure used to treat an
ingrown nail, in which it is applied to the nail bed to prevent
regrowth of nails.
NAPTHALENE, C10H8

• Act as a raw material in the manufacture of dyes, plasticizers

and insecticides.
• Also used in the production of some pharmaceutical products
• Naphthalene can be used as a fumigant for repelling moths
• Naphthalene is a component of coal tar creosote, which was
used as a wood preservative in the past.
ANTHRACENE, C14H10

• Anthracene is used as a scintillator for detectors of high

energy photons, electrons and alpha particles
• Plastics such as polyvinyltolulene can be doped with
Anthracene to produce a plastic scintillator that is
approximately water equivalent for use in radiation therapy
dosimetry.
PHENANTHRENE, C14H10

• May act as carcinogen that cause cancer

PYRENE, C16H10

• Pyrene and its derivatives are used commercially to make

dyes and dye precursors, for example pyranine and
naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid. Its derivatives are
also valuable molecular probes via fluorescence spectroscopy,
having a high quantum yield and lifetime
BENZONE (ἀ) PYRENE, C20H12

• Product of combustion
• Identified in tobacco smoke, coal tar and automobile exhaust
DIBENZONE (A,L) PYRENE

• Most potent carcinogen
